Great Songwriter!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Postcards From Downtown (Audio CD)
I ordered this cd after hearing another artist recommend Dayna Kurtz, and what a great surprise! Her songwriting skills far surpass any of those chart-topping ladies (Alanis Morrisette, Sheryl Crow, etc.), and her voice is beautiful, unusual and skilled. The only thing that holds her back slightly are some of the musical arrangements-at times they bury her in the mix, and seem to plod along at an unnaturally slow pace. She's credited with guitar playing, but on several songs the guitar is lost behind muddy percussion and overt electric guitar. Standout tracks include "Somebody Leave A Light On", and "Postcards From Downtown". Though I long to hear this artist record a solo album, this one is still well worth the purchase. I predict great things ahead for this worthy talent!

I saw Dayna live in Milwaukee, WI and went without drinks all night so I could buy her album that evening. You listen to her once and you'll be caught up in her music!

I first heard Dayna Kurtz on iTunes Radio listening to the Grassy Hill feed. They played her song "Miss Liberty" and it just seemed to jump out at me. I ordered the CD that day from Amazon and was blown away by not only that song but by the album. I also like "Last Good Taste." The whole album has a good full sound with a lot of passion. Her lyrics are insightful and deep, well worth the purchase.

Already out in Europe, the 3rd record from Dayna Kurtz "Another Black Feather.... for The Wings of a Sinner" is a true masterpiece as well. She uses her talents to write and play songs in many music styles, from blues to jazz, from klezmer to roots, she does it all. Dayna shows her love for cities like New York, but especially New Orleans. After everything what happenend last year I would say:
Dayna for mayor of New Orleans!

The song "Fred Astaire" dug itself deep into my head. I listened to it over and over during a long car ride. The good news is the rest of the album is really great as well. The songs are strong, her voice is hauntingly beautiful and the arrangements are simple but complement her voice perfectly. I won't reduce Dayna's unique gift with comparisons. If music means more to you than something that drones in the background I would strongly recommend that you buy this album.

An uncompromising new major talent,

It's not often that I have been so blown away by something that I've heard on the radio that I have to pull off of the road to listen to it -- maybe two other times in my long life. Hearing Danya Kurtz recently on World Cafe was one of those times. Her style recalls Tom Waits, some later Marianne Faithful, and some Bonnie Raitt and some PJ Harvey. The thoughtful accompaniment (imagine Waits band with the Kronos Quartet) is worth buying the ceedee alone, but the songs are even better. I can't pick out a favorite song - they all perfectly fit a different mood - but "Love Gets in the Way" would fit easiest on a Triple A station's format. This is late night music - smokey and like molasses, never perky, but never turgid.

The best singer/songwriter album I heard this year. Dayna Kurtz's got incredible timing and an absolutely beautiful voice wether she wispers or screams. Jazzy and rough, the songs show a mature emotional range. A nice balanced cd. Only downside, it;s a little short.

Dayna Rocks!!!,

I've been following Dayna for three years at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA. I never miss her. She's one woman and one guitar and you will absolutely be mesmerized. Her lyrics are beyond description. I think my all time faves are Paterson (extraordinary) and Just Like Jack (damn straight). I promise if you listen to her CD, you'll be a fan for life.
