Book Description

1588903036 978-1588903037 August 27, 2006 1
Posterolateral Knee Injuries: Anatomy, Evaluation, and Treatment covers the complex anatomy of the posterolateral knee, the varied examination techniques, surgical and nonsurgical treatments, and therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises available to manage conditions of the posterolateral knee.

You will gain the knowledge you need to use multi-pronged approaches to treat posterolateral ligament tears, posterolateral rotatory instability, combined ligament injuries, injuries causing abnormal knee movement, and much more. Underscoring the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis of posterolateral knee injuries, the author reviews the imaging and diagnostic tests to help you ensure that the presence of an injury is not overlooked or misinterpreted. With the text’s discussion of clinically relevant biomechanics and the correlation of pertinent exams needed for diagnosis, you will not only develop a firmer understanding of the relationship between instability abnormalities and posterolateral knee injuries, but you will also improve your ability to examine and recognize these injuries.

Highlights:

• A thorough review of anatomical nomenclature clarifies structures which are often confused

• More than 150 illustrations call attention to key issues and clearly delineate anatomical concepts

• Step-by-step descriptions of treatments of acute injury

• Guidance on examination techniques for patients with concurrent ligament injuries in the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and/or posterior cruciate ligament, in either acute or chronic situations

• Complete review of workup for chronic injury patients requiring either an osteotomy and/or a reconstruction

Posterolateral Knee Injuries is an indispensable reference for all orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, and fellows in these specialties working with patients with acute and chronic knee injuries and related pathology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book is highly recommended to anyone involved in the medical evaluation and management of knee injuries. Rehabilitation specialists will find this book particularly valuable in the identification and evaluation of knee injuries and for clarifying the many different terms, structures, and tests used in the literature. Of the many positives with this text, most noteworthy is the thoroughness with which the topics are covered. ..This book should be a reference for your next encounter with a patient with posterolateral corner knee injury. The chapters covering the historical perspectives and the chapter on the evaluation techniques are must-reads for anyone involved in the primary evaluation of knee injuries. This text provides a comprehensive, detailed summary of what we know to date about the posterolateral corner of the knee in a way that only a single-topic, dedicated text can. The author shares his vast understanding of the topic at a level of detail unavailable elsewhere. Overall, the text is well referenced, science based, and reflects the current practice standards. Those involved in the care of knee injuries both acutely and postacutely will benefit from the information presented in this text."--Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy

He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies in 1993 and his sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia in 1994. While at the Hughston Clinic, he was greatly influenced by the attention to anatomic details and clinical teachings of one of the founders of Sports Medicine, Jack Hughston MD. He was an assistant professor in sports medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch from 1994-1996 and joined the University of Minnesota in 1996. He subsequently earned his PhD with a thesis on "The Anatomy, Diagnosis and Biomechanics of Posterolateral Knee Injuries" from the University of Oslo in 2003 and was awarded a Career Development Grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation on the Natural History of Posterolateral Knee Injuries.
Dr. LaPrade has published over 125 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts, over 50 invited articles and book chapters, and one comprehensive textbook on "Posterolateral Knee Injuries: Anatomy, Function and Treatment." He has also been awarded the Albert Trillat Young Investigator award from ISAKOS, the J. Albert Key Research Award from the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, the 3M Excellence in Clinical Research Award from the AOSSM, and the Excellence in Research Award from the AOSSM. Through this collaboration, several surgeries to treat complex knee injuries were invented after extensive research including detailed anatomic studies, biomechanical testing, and development of new diagnostic means to diagnose these complex injuries. Clinical outcome studies have also been published which validated these new reconstruction procedures.
Dr. LaPrade has been appointed as the Director of Biomechanics Research in the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, and his researchers at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI), form one of the strongest sports medicine research teams in the world. Current plans are to expand research collaboration with the University of Oslo at SPRI.
