Book Description

September 2, 2002
He turns 50 this year yet, oddly, he was married before his first birthday. He's been a television star and appeared in two major motion pictures. And now he is the focal point of his own daily comic strip. He is the man, the myth, the legend...the potato. Mr. Potato Head, one of America's all-time favorite toys, is fast becoming one of the most loved cartoons. Mr. Potato Head Unplugged is the first collection of the strip, which debuted in the summer of 2001. Mr. Potato Head, the comic strip, has a lot going for it: Not only does it feature a toy that's a member of the Toy Hall of Fame, but the cocreaters of the strip are legendary cartoonist Jim Davis and Garfield collaborator Brett Koth. Together, the two blend their humor-writing and artistic talents to create a strip that tips a hat - as well as a nose, a mustache, and a couple ears - to the classic situation comedy. Mr. Potato Head is not a lone spud. He lives with his wife, Mrs. Potato Head (but of course) and their little taters, 13-year-old Julienne and 10-year-old Chip. The four deal with such typical family follies as sibling rivalry, office issues, and chores, plus other unique challenges that come with being a large-headed tuber in the new millennium. Mr. P, as he's affectionately referred to by Davis, is a total couch potato when he's at home. His wife is a bit more ambitious as the author of her own gardening column, "Ask Mrs. P." Mr. Potato Head Unplugged is sure to sprout rib-tickling laughs with readers of all generations, from young children discovering this much-loved spud for the first time to baby boomers who remember the toy as the first one ever advertised on television.

3.0 out of 5 stars cute- but not usually very funny, August 28, 2004
By
Josh Bozeman (Evansville, IN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Potato Head Unplugged (Paperback)
The Mr. Potato Head comic is cute...it's sometimes funny, but when it is, it's more cute funny than anything else. I'm in the middle of this book now, and I was hoping for more. Some fans might love it, and I wanted to love it myself, but I don't. I just like it overall...and some of the strips are just completely unfunny. There are too many Dear Mrs. P comics- and none of these are very funny to me...the best ones are where Mr. Potato Head himself is the star of the 3 windowed story. Some of the jokes fall totally flat, and that was surprising to me, seeing as how it's a strip from Davis...and another guy I've never heard of before.

I wouldn't recommend buying this book, unless you happen to be in love with potato head...I'd get it at the library and enjoy what you will of it that way. It's not bad, but it's not great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Naked, raw emotion from one of the true greats, January 10, 2003
By
nickunt (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Potato Head Unplugged (Paperback)
I'd say this was my favourite of all the Unplugged series, probably even surpassing the late Nirvana for pure, raw, naked emotion. Mr Potato Head was always a troubled artist, and at times, his heart-rending vocals give a terrible insight into what was to come, following this, one of his final public recordings. The passion with which he sings "Bake Me" is purely breathtaking, as is the rousing "Twas on the good Chip Venus". The only low point of this collection would be the truly awful "Starch Trekking (across the universe)" - and I doubt many would argue against me.
