Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Booker is known as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, and arranger, and is best known for fronting Booker T and the MGs. This is his first solo album in decades. He teamed with southern rockers Drive-By Truckers to produce an album that is raw and edgy, fun and innovative. And just to seal the deal, long-time Booker associate Neil Young dropped by to play blistering lead guitar on nine of the ten tracks. Produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Rickie Lee Jones, Foo Fighters) and Booker T.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful mix of R&B/Funk/Rock, April 21, 2009
By Mark A. Cartier "Cartier" (Portland, Or. USA) - See all my reviews

I agree with Yossarian. A very nice CD (all instrumental) for your car or your home when you need to relax or are in the mood to relax.

The backing band is essentially the Drive-By Truckers (not the first time they've been the band for another artist) with Neil Young as the lead guitarist.

Notable foot tapping tracks: Pound It Out, Potato Hole and Native New Yorker.

Pleasing notable soulful tracks: Hey Ya, Nan, Warped Sister, Reunion Time.

Booker weaves in and out of the mix with the guitars for an overall very pleasing mix. While you may miss Donald Dunn and Steve Cropper - this is an effort worth hearing. Recommended. If you can afford it in these times - I suspect it will improve your mood.

I ordered this when I first saw it was coming out because I love the old records with the MGs. Then I heard that Neil Young plays a bunch on it & I heard it was pretty good...

That's too slight a review,This thing Kicks it and right from the start on "Pound It Out" it's some Hard Rocking Joy,it is GREAT. I will be playing this thing Daily for some time to Come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n Roll!, April 21, 2009
Do you ever wake up completely worn down by the day to day madness, only to realize before lifting your head that you have a full day of hard work ahead of you? You can go two ways: you can moan your way through, or you can rock out, snarl at the world, and own it.

If you choose the intense, passionate response, you may be lucky enough to encounter moments of unexpected beauty and calmness amidst the grinding gears of your experience. And if you can begin to understand how those moments fall into the next, you can ride that wave, blending happiness and purity into the grease and grit.

That's how I hear Potato Hole.

1.0 out of 5 stars OK background music
This isn't the Booker T music we grew up with. If you crank up half the songs it sounds like a bad live Neil Young album with Crazy Horse noodling interminably. Read more

I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought that I would. It seems a bit repetitive. However I'm glad that I purchased it. It's really quite good even if I expected more.
