4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful mix of R&B/Funk/Rock
I agree with Yossarian. A very nice CD (all instrumental) for your car or your home when you need to relax or are in the mood to relax.

The backing band is essentially the Drive-By Truckers (not the first time they've been the band for another artist) with Neil Young as the lead guitarist.

Notable foot tapping tracks: Pound It Out, Potato Hole...

3.0 out of 5 stars Makes me really miss Steve Cropper. . . .
OK -- so this is an overall pretty good CD. However, this Heavy Fuzzy getar stuff -- though I love it in other bands like Blue Cheer and Crazy Horse -- don't think this is the best setting for the original Mr. T. That clean, economical Cropper chopper just sounds so much better . . . miss the subtlety, beauty, grace and power of that less is more thing.

I agree with Yossarian. A very nice CD (all instrumental) for your car or your home when you need to relax or are in the mood to relax.

The backing band is essentially the Drive-By Truckers (not the first time they've been the band for another artist) with Neil Young as the lead guitarist.

Notable foot tapping tracks: Pound It Out, Potato Hole and Native New Yorker.

Pleasing notable soulful tracks: Hey Ya, Nan, Warped Sister, Reunion Time.

Booker weaves in and out of the mix with the guitars for an overall very pleasing mix. While you may miss Donald Dunn and Steve Cropper - this is an effort worth hearing. Recommended. If you can afford it in these times - I suspect it will improve your mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n Roll!, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Potato Hole (Audio CD)
Do you ever wake up completely worn down by the day to day madness, only to realize before lifting your head that you have a full day of hard work ahead of you? You can go two ways: you can moan your way through, or you can rock out, snarl at the world, and own it.

If you choose the intense, passionate response, you may be lucky enough to encounter moments of unexpected beauty and calmness amidst the grinding gears of your experience. And if you can begin to understand how those moments fall into the next, you can ride that wave, blending happiness and purity into the grease and grit.

That's how I hear Potato Hole.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Booker T. Jones, May 21, 2009
This review is from: Potato Hole (Audio CD)
Considering this isn't a Booker T. & The M.G.s of yesterday, I don't understand why reviewers are trying to stuff this record into their catalog. It's experimental and searching. I love the collaboration with the Drive By Truckers, expecially on the cover of Space City. The Hey Ya tune is pretty sweet, and I love that Neil Young is sitting in on guitar. Great effor by a great musician. Why try and capture Green Onions anyway? Let's move on to 2009 and enjoy this record for what it provides the listener. Great rockin' tunes. Thank you Mr. Jones, Mr. Young, and the Drive By Truckers! This has turned out to be a great year for music!

Potato Hole is a great instrumental album. Booker T's organ playing feels funky and familiar and all the boys from the Drive By Truckers create a whale of a good time in support. Neil Young plays killer guitar as well, but it's the Truckers rhythm section of Brad Morgan and Shonna Tucker that makes my booty shake and my speakers skate around the room.

5.0 out of 5 stars well deserved grammy award winner, February 1, 2010
This review is from: Potato Hole (Audio CD)
I've been telling everyone i know about how good this recording is since i first purchased it. i really knew nothing about it, save for the sticker blurb on the front cover and was more than pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the recording. now i can say i was certainly not alone as it won the grammy for "Best Pop Instrumental Album". this is the only time in recent memory that i can say i was rooting for any album to win a grammy, and i'm very relieved that it did. kudos to booker t, drive by truckers and neil young for making a true work of art.

Neil Young on guitar gave a big hand to his friend Booker T. The resulting tracks on the album are enjoyable, although for a couple of them the music sort of weakens and falters. Good stuff overall, though !

5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation, June 28, 2009

Like all baby boomers, I know and love Green Onions. I also saw Booker T back Neil Young (my favorite musician of all time) back in the 90s in Finsbury Park in London, when he was a perfect suppport.

However that was then and this is now, so I only really bought this CD because it features Young on guitar and got decent reviews.

Within seconds of pushing the CD into my car's player (it was a sunny day and the top was down, so the omens were favorable) I was hooked.

Put briefly this is the coolest recording made this year. I suspect only Booker T can make a Hammond organ sound cool, sexy, funky and just the happeningest sound ever.

And the contribution from Neil Young lives up to the standard of Booker T and the rest of the musicians, which is really saying something.

I've told all my friends to buy this CD. I suggest you do too.

5.0 out of 5 stars I dig Potato Hole, June 27, 2009

Booker T is back! Not that he ever went away. Neil Young and the Drive By Truckers do a great job backing him up. I like the bass runs in the songs. Great cover of "Hey Ya". I also like the art on the cover of the CD.
