Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This compilation of seven fanciful troll tales is original and intriguing. Deliciously ugly trolls with names like Grog the Proud, Buggly, Binka, Murkle and Mog frolic through trolldom solving a multiplicity of vexatious problems. In "The Potato Party" one family, anxious to rid themselves of an excess of potatoes, throws a spectacular spud bash but are foiled when well-meaning trolls return with a sled full of potatoes to repay their hospitality. In "The Fish Contest" young Bomble troll resorts to a clever trick to win the contest and thereby take the princess to the ball. Leedy's simple stories are whimsically told, with unusual plot twists and surprise endings that add to the fun. Her action-packed, cartoony watercolors add the finishing touches to this successful fantasy kingdom: these are indeed droll trolls. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A delightfully wacky collection of seven original stories about clever, foolish, and ingenious trolls. The stories are short in length and simple in sentence structure, but use enough descriptive language and playful names to make them naturals for sharing aloud with young children. A proud troll searches for the perfect wife--only to discover that his ideal woman wants no part of him. In the title story, a family of trolls tries to get rid of an excess of potatoes by throwing a "potato party." Their idea works--until a thankful guest thoughtfully replenishes their supply of potatoes. Trying to impress a troll princess, a young troll brags about the huge fish he will catch. Unable to catch anything, he makes a fish out of mud and wins the contest because of his cleverness. In Leedy's fanciful cartoons, trolls cavort, dance, scheme, and eat across pages washed with green, lavender, brown, and blue watercolors. Adding to the book's appeal is the balanced page design between text and illustrations. A collection that will find welcoming audiences among both the "read to" crowd and early independent readers. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL

More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.
