Book Description

Sweet Potato Queens Series January 1, 2008
When does 1 + 1 = 3 (or more)? When you’ve got a baby on the way. Part of that new math, says #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne - whom USA Today calls “just plain funny” - includes the addition of an outsize sense of humor to balance the equation of your growing family. The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, for anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one, knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable - so, you might as well laugh! As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey together as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of “knowledge,” the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love - or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever - and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide. - How to Talk to a Pregnant Woman - How the Diamonds on Delivery Policy Can Speed Up the Labor Nature Intended - Why a Good Mother Is Always Adept at Subterfuge - The List of Things You Wouldn’t Think You Would Have to Tell Kids Not to Do - Why Mothers of Sons Can Never Retire and - Why, for Parents, It’s Just a Short Drive to the Poorhouse The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit will have everyone who’s ever been a parent - or ever thought of becoming one - or been a child - or is still one - giggling and grinning (no small feat) through those child-bearing years…and beyond.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Browne once again proves she's the perfect reader of her own rollicking, raucous and riotously funny essays on motherhood and child rearing. You don't have to be a parent or even on the road to parenthood to appreciate her skewed views on the topic. She wonders why mothers dispense scare tactic misinformation to promote abstinence (like French kissing will make you turn up pregnant) when the truth is far more frightening (episiotomies and nipples the size of salad plates). Browne's spirited reading coaxes the laughs out of the material with a gentle Southern drawl, not a standup comic's rim shot. Her observational humor is mixed with tales of empowerment and life lessons. Listeners will have a hard time staying dry-eyed during the final chapter where, choked with emotion, Browne relives a harrowing month that included a fatal car accident and a cancer diagnosis for a woman who was a second mother to her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious fun, February 8, 2008
Prolly the gal above just hadn't been in the throes of child rearin' in a while. I found this highly entertaining and inflicted chapters of it on unsuspecting friends, co workers, relatives and even my very own Most Definitely Cutest Boy in the World. The Alpha Mom description about made me need a depends and the chapter on Penii, since I have a couple of owners them under the age of ten, to rear, also left me in fits.

Check it out of the library if you are too scared to plop down some money but overall it was a good hour or more of entertainment and had a few parenting tricks in there to boot. Read it your ownself if you want to know.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing..., July 28, 2008
I loved the other SPQ books, and this one started off laugh-out-loud great... but then it lost momentum. I felt like half the book was an advertisement for her other books, and i got tired of her use of the word "herveryownself." Once or twice would have been fine, but it got tiresome. If you can borrow a copy, it might be worth the read, but don't waste your money buying the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous SPQ books, February 14, 2008
By
Laurie Pollpeter "Laurie" (Colgate, Wi United States) - See all my reviews
I have loved the previous Sweet Potato Queen books, though none can top the first SPQ book! This book started out really funny then kind of died. I was laughing out loud on an airplane in the beginning of the book, then put it away until the return flight as I just lost interest. But, if you have small children, you shoould find it very humerous.
