Hilarious fun,
By Jackie Kennidy "beachreader" (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit (Hardcover)
Prolly the gal above just hadn't been in the throes of child rearin' in a while. I found this highly entertaining and inflicted chapters of it on unsuspecting friends, co workers, relatives and even my very own Most Definitely Cutest Boy in the World. The Alpha Mom description about made me need a depends and the chapter on Penii, since I have a couple of owners them under the age of ten, to rear, also left me in fits.
Check it out of the library if you are too scared to plop down some money but overall it was a good hour or more of entertainment and had a few parenting tricks in there to boot. Read it your ownself if you want to know.

disappointing...,
This review is from: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit (Hardcover)
I loved the other SPQ books, and this one started off laugh-out-loud great... but then it lost momentum. I felt like half the book was an advertisement for her other books, and i got tired of her use of the word "herveryownself." Once or twice would have been fine, but it got tiresome. If you can borrow a copy, it might be worth the read, but don't waste your money buying the book.

Not as good as previous SPQ books,
By Laurie Pollpeter "Laurie" (Colgate, Wi United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit (Hardcover)
I have loved the previous Sweet Potato Queen books, though none can top the first SPQ book! This book started out really funny then kind of died. I was laughing out loud on an airplane in the beginning of the book, then put it away until the return flight as I just lost interest. But, if you have small children, you shoould find it very humerous.

I was challenged to read any of the Sweet Potato Queens' books by a friend on another web site for those of us who are addicted to reading. I, of course, came to Amazon to hunt up these books and check out for myself what the big attraction was. I found most of the books, and in my own style ordered one of each of the books. I am still in the process of reading them, but have thumbed through and read clips of each one. These ladies are so funny. The books are irreverent...and in some cases a little too spicy for some...but for the most part, Jill writes the thoughts that I'm sure all of us have had at one time or another. There is no doubt in my mind that she absolutely adores her daughter, but some of the stories she writes are so funny you will cry when you are reading them. I think the greatest part of her books is the fact that we can picture ourselves, or someone near and dear to us, in every situation she writes about.
If you love to laugh...and especially if you started out South of the Mason-Dixon Line...you will absolutely love this book. You will laugh so hard your sides will ache. My son came in while I was laughing hysterically and asked what was wrong with me. Told me how strange I was to be sitting alone and laughing so hard. Well, I take that as a compliment. I always wanted to be unique...as are all the Sweet Potato Queens.

Jill - Where Has All Your Wit Gone?,
This review is from: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit (Hardcover)
This book was not nearly as good as the first three Sweet Potato Queen books. I guess you can't be funny and charming all the time. The Sweet Potato Queens have become big business so maybe that's the problem. I didn't like Brown's novel either. Neither of these books had the same wit and humor as the previous Sweet Potato Queens' books. Jill, please go back to your roots (whatever color they may be). The Fun and Profit of this book was all yours.

I picked the hardcover up for a buck at Dollar Tree, so that tell you something. I suppose if you were new to the SPQ books you might find some things funny that serial readers are used to by now. Alternately, you might find continuous references to content in the previous books irritating.
And besides, she has written this YEARS after her pregnancy so one does wonder how "fresh on the mind" these memories are. I have birth a couple times and I'll tell you, let a few years of child rearin' go by and you pretty much forget all that birthin' stuff. Truthfully I am only half finished and I will finish it altho I do not have that 'can't put it down' urge. Look for it at thrift shops and garage sales and 1 cent offers on Amazon. Not worth the 'new' price.

If you're looking for a serious book, then you prolly wouldn't even pick up one entitled "Raising Children for Fun and Profit." If you're ready for some down-home Southern-style readin' and writin' then ANY of the "SPQ" books are for you! (And I'm not just saying this because I'm the "diamonds on delivery" mama!)(for real!! I really am! the girl child's name is Miss Riley and she loves her diamonds too!)
The books really are a great, fun read! Get all your girlfriends to read 'em too.... then you can talk and laugh about 'em over some Sangria or Margaritas!!! Enjoy!

My first sweet potato queen book...,

I had seen Sweet Potato Queen books before, but never read one. I had no idea what a sweet potato queen was! I could only gather she's a southern belle who doesn't take crap from anyone and cooks fattening foods...the author seems to assume in this book that we already know her life story, so perhaps this wasn't the best place to start. I enjoyed it anyway though. :)
I picked up this book because it was on sale for $5, and it was autographed, AND because all my friends are having children now - I figured it would be good for laughs. It's a humorous, and realistic look at raising kids. She tells her own stories as well as stories of other "queens". At several places I laughed out loud, at one point I fought tears, and some other stories of rebellious children frightened me. It was a quick read and I kept coming back for more. I must add that it took me some time to get used to her style. She's a self-admitted 'potty mouth' and her spelling/grammar is deliberately off, to convey her manner of speaking. Instead of 'my sister', she says 'my seester.' Probably becomes prolly. Myself becomes myveryownself. This drove me crazy at first. After a chapter or two, I started to look past it and concentrate on the stories. By the end I was used to it. This woman definitely has her own unique style. |
