5.0 out of 5 stars PetPig People need this book!
Pigs are not your average pet. They're smarter and more demanding than any dog or cat. But too often we hear that a pig owner can't meet the challenge of ownership. What should be a 15 year (or so) commitment is too often terminated with the pig abandoned. Many of these failed relationships between a petpig and their owner could be saved with a little pre-education...

3.0 out of 5 stars Potbellied Pig Behavior
I knew when I got this book that it might not work out as expected since I owned a Papua New Guinea wild boar. I couldn't train him at all with the techniques discussed, although a Vietnamese Potbellied Pig would follow them. My Papua New Guinea wild boar was very wild.

Eventually I had to sell him as meat because he was so undomesticated. In all, this book...

Pigs are not your average pet. They're smarter and more demanding than any dog or cat. But too often we hear that a pig owner can't meet the challenge of ownership. What should be a 15 year (or so) commitment is too often terminated with the pig abandoned. Many of these failed relationships between a petpig and their owner could be saved with a little pre-education and patience. I think this is where Potbellied Pig Behavior and Training reveals it's greatest potential. Ms. Valentine is a professional pig owner, trainer, performer and educator. Her love of pigs comes shining through her book. She brings her hard earned lessons to this easy to read and entertaining book about pet pigs. She covers everything from how to select a pig and what to feed it to how to train it and keep it (and you) happy with the relationship. This is must pre-reading for anyone considering adopting a pig who wants to get the most from their existing long term commitment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Training Book! A must for all PBP owners!, April 8, 2002
By
Priscilla Valentine has written a masterpiece on training of the potbellied pig. Besides the fun of seeing your pet do tricks, this book is great for the new owner or the experienced owner with a problem pig-child. Through training your pig and giving him something to work for, much better all-around behavior can be attained. If you are considering this book, buy it! Priscilla has included info on selection and care of the pet pig as well.

If you are considering adopting a Pot Bellied Pig, this is the book for you. There are lots of cute colored photos, but the book is mainly packed with ideas on how to interact and make strong bond with your pet pig.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Valentine's book, September 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First of all, I ADORE this book! I am a happy and proud pot-bellied pigger Momma. Ms. Priscilla Valentine has penned what we (in the community of pigger companions/rescuers/lovers) hail as the consumate Pig-Bible! There are lots of great books and websites out there, and I suggest reading and enjoying everything you can, but Ms. Valentine's book makes care and training understandable, achievable, and FUN! Ms. V. doesn't talk down to the newly realized pig family, but rather embraces us all, hooved and round-nosed, and those who love them, alike. This book has a real Chicken Soup for the Soul feel. If you don't have time for a cover-to-cover read, you can read in vignette fashion. Whether you have a PBP or are crazy for the super-intelligent little oinkers, or are just curious, this IS the best book written! FIVE STARS for Ms. Valentine. My one and only complaint, but a legitimate one.. I don't know if it's the economy or what.. but everything I have ordered by mail order lately, has taken an insane amount of time to be delivered. This book took nearly a month to arrive, and the second book I ordered is not here yet. (sigh) Worth the wait, now that it's here, but I doubt I will use Amazon again until things improve. Tentatively Hopeful.. P.A.Hamilton :)

5.0 out of 5 stars This author knows her pigs...., January 6, 2009

This review is from: Potbellied Pig Behavior and Training: A Complete Guide for Solving Behavioral Problems in Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs, Revised Edition (Paperback)
I am a first time pig owner, and would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is thinking about "owning" a pig.

The color photo section (probably 20 pages) highlighting her pigs is superfluous, but that certainly does not detract from this book being a solid "how to" book on how to raise a well-behaved house pig.

This book seems to be one of the few good "modern" books (i.e. written this century) about potbellies. Things have changed so much in the potbellied world that anything more than a 5 years old seems positively ancient.

Personally, I think the most valuable part of the book is the insight it gives you into pig psychology. Until I owned one, I had no idea how complex and puzzling these creatures can be. This book definitely helped me understand what was going on inside that pig head.

The training part is pretty fun too, and her methodology definitely works. It's fun to have a pig do tricks. But I really bought the book because I needed some help dealing with a smart, stubborn, willful, spoiled and naughty piglet. f

Was extrememly helpful on giving me insight how to help prevent unruly behavior. Being as pigs are extremely intelligent animals with good memories - it is best to mold their behavior as they grow. We have just started teaching obedience. I have obedience trained dogs in the past, but have found (through this book) teaching a pig is quite different. We have started the basic training and are looking forward to teaching tricks - it helps build a relationship with these beloved animals. This book along with The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pet Potbellied Pigs - Revised Edition have helped me immensely. We plan to enjoy our pig for years to comeand feel this book will help us accomplish that.
