5.0 out of 5 stars extremely successful with my children, July 21, 2003
This review is from: Potholders and Other Loopy Projects (Klutz) (Spiral-bound)
My eleven-year-old son liked this kit quite a bit, and my almost seven-year-old son LOVED it! He enjoyed designing potholders with nice color progressions and patterns, and made potholder after potholder until we ran out of loops. (The kit had enough loops for about seven or eight potholders, I think, though the last one had badly clashing colors. We need more loops now.)

As a parent, I appreciated the clear instructions in how to finish the edges, and, since my children are so enthusiastic, I am grateful for all the things the book describes making with the finished products, so I'm not obligated to give all of those potholders a home in my kitchen. :-) There are several clever little projects.

The included loom is made of sturdy plastic which does not hurt your fingers, and they also enclose a crochet hook and a large plastic needle for finishing. No other materials are needed, which made this a great find for kid entertainment on our vacation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book sold it for me, July 16, 2007
This review is from: Potholders and Other Loopy Projects (Klutz) (Spiral-bound)
My daughter received Klutz potholders for her 5th birthday and the next day we weaved together a beautiful blue and yellow potholder to use in my kitchen. I like this kit over the Alex kit because of the book. Very easy instructions, and cheerful, bold illustrations made this a very fun and rewarding mother and daughter experience. She just turned 5, so she did need some assistance, but halfway through our chanting of "over the bridge, under the bridge", she was quite capable of doing it herself. I know there is a metal loom on the market and I'm sure it would be better than the plastic one that comes in the Klutz kit, but we did not run into any problems using the plastic loom other than a few of the loops sliding off their pegs near the end of the weaving process, but my 5 year old would notice and quickly fix it. Buy this kit for the book. Other kits have those black and white instructions pamphlets that don't have the joy factor that the Klutz book has.

My 9 year old son wanted this, and I sighed and bought it, thinking I would have to do most of the work. To my delight, he opened the pack and completed the very first potholder without any direction from me at all. It's a wonderful kit with very child friendly instructions. He did co-opt my husband into finishing the loops for him, but it definitely keeps him engaged. We are going to take it on the plane with us when we travel.
Easy to do and quick results. He loves it. My only quibble is that the fabric itself is not the greatest quality (I'm not sure how long the finished product will last) but the joy of creating them is strong.

Oct 2008 - I just wanted to add that we've had this for a couple of years now, and just yesterday he pulled it out again and made another one. He still likes making them, and we give them as small gifts to the grand parents and everyone is happy. A good long term toy.
