extremely successful with my children,
This review is from: Potholders and Other Loopy Projects (Klutz) (Spiral-bound)
My eleven-year-old son liked this kit quite a bit, and my almost seven-year-old son LOVED it! He enjoyed designing potholders with nice color progressions and patterns, and made potholder after potholder until we ran out of loops. (The kit had enough loops for about seven or eight potholders, I think, though the last one had badly clashing colors. We need more loops now.)As a parent, I appreciated the clear instructions in how to finish the edges, and, since my children are so enthusiastic, I am grateful for all the things the book describes making with the finished products, so I'm not obligated to give all of those potholders a home in my kitchen. :-) There are several clever little projects. The included loom is made of sturdy plastic which does not hurt your fingers, and they also enclose a crochet hook and a large plastic needle for finishing. No other materials are needed, which made this a great find for kid entertainment on our vacation.

My daughter received Klutz potholders for her 5th birthday and the next day we weaved together a beautiful blue and yellow potholder to use in my kitchen. I like this kit over the Alex kit because of the book. Very easy instructions, and cheerful, bold illustrations made this a very fun and rewarding mother and daughter experience. She just turned 5, so she did need some assistance, but halfway through our chanting of "over the bridge, under the bridge", she was quite capable of doing it herself. I know there is a metal loom on the market and I'm sure it would be better than the plastic one that comes in the Klutz kit, but we did not run into any problems using the plastic loom other than a few of the loops sliding off their pegs near the end of the weaving process, but my 5 year old would notice and quickly fix it. Buy this kit for the book. Other kits have those black and white instructions pamphlets that don't have the joy factor that the Klutz book has.

My 9 year old son wanted this, and I sighed and bought it, thinking I would have to do most of the work. To my delight, he opened the pack and completed the very first potholder without any direction from me at all. It's a wonderful kit with very child friendly instructions. He did co-opt my husband into finishing the loops for him, but it definitely keeps him engaged. We are going to take it on the plane with us when we travel.
Easy to do and quick results. He loves it. My only quibble is that the fabric itself is not the greatest quality (I'm not sure how long the finished product will last) but the joy of creating them is strong. Oct 2008 - I just wanted to add that we've had this for a couple of years now, and just yesterday he pulled it out again and made another one. He still likes making them, and we give them as small gifts to the grand parents and everyone is happy. A good long term toy.

Great Product,
This review is from: Potholders and Other Loopy Projects (Klutz) (Spiral-bound)
I looked at several loop potholder sets and am so glad I chose to purchase this one. The book has excellent illustrations and makes it very easy to follow directions to make several different projects. It comes with plenty of loops. My daughter is 3 and always wants to knit when I do, so this was my solution and so far it has worked. She loves picking out the next color loop and using the crochet hook to weave.

I like this just fine. After receiving it, I see that it's no better than any other loom from the local store. I bought this one because it had the book with other ideas of things to make. You can be just as creative on your own. They make a purse by tying two of them together, or a bean bag, just goofy stuff. You just make a potholder and do what you wanna do with it.
I would give this a 5 if I hadn't had to spend more money on it and it's no better than the ones half the price. :(

Nice update on the craft I learned as a kid,

We don't do too many crafts in our house. I find crafts to be kind of tedious and messy. I learned how to do this in Brownies many years ago. My 8-year-old daughter is excited about making potholders and caught on to finishing the edge very fast. I enjoyed it so much I opened it and made two after she went to bed. I like them better than the potholders in my kitchen, actually.
The instructions were clear, kid-friendly and made the project exciting. I really like the various weaving patterns: stripes, houndstooth, fiesta, confetti, etc... There are patterns for making a purse and a chicken. These loops are very easy to work with. They are a polyester blend and stretch just the right amount. We ran out of loops very quickly and went to the craft store. They had very poor quality loops which were quite a disappointment. I will be buying more loops online. I haven't found the best price for replacement loops. This hobby could get a little expensive. Instead of buying new loops I'd like to recycle old fabric I have at home like socks, t-shirt sleeves, etc...

Just like I used to have...and made zillions of pot holders. Only drawback, doesn't come with many loops, but you can buy large bags of replacements for very little $.

The best for potholders!,

I bought this book and the extra potholders for my 7 year old daughter's birthday! She loves it! She has become a potholder queen! The book has GREAT ideas on patterns and ideas for various potholders. The step by step directions (with pictures) are awesome! She can complete an entire potholder by herself! The other ideas included in the book turn ordinary potholders into cute creations (ie a purse - the envy of all her friends!) Definitely better than just a loom!

Great craft project,

My 10 year old loves this craft. She can easily create potholders by herself in less than an hour (hurrah, no unfinished projects!). I did need to show her how to finish the edges for the first potholder (great instructions in the book) and after that she could handle it by herself. The quality of the loops is excellent. Now I need to find more loops...she wants to make one for EVERYONE for Christmas.

Klutz books are known for their quality - this is no exception.
This set includes the loopy loom and cotton loops that are made for the loom. The loom itself is well finished - no snags to catch little fingers or the loops themselves. Lesser products use mystery fiber loops that may or may not fit the looms. I would recommend purchasing the extra loops when buying the this set. Extra Stuff for Potholders and Other Loopy Projects (Klutz Extra Stuff) There are plenty of loops included, but the book is inspirational, and it's fun not to be limited by the colors or quantity available. This is fun for both girls and boys - besides potholders, there are pillows, purses (or treasure pouches) even a chicken! I will admit that I find the book and loops somewhat pricey at first glance, but well worth it for hours of fun and creativity. |
