More About the Author

I am truly blessed to be able to make a living doing what I love so very much to do.

I wrote my first story - it was a western - when I was five. It was really awful, as might be expected, but my mother kept that typed and spell-checked (my mother again) short story tucked away until the day she died.

Later I became a newspaper reporter, thinking that books are written by authors which I most assuredly was not. I kept trying to write though, eventually did it wrong enough to learn how to get it right. That first sale, a young adult novel published by Independence Press, was more than thirty years and a good many books ago and I have loved every day since.

Did I mention how very blessed I am? Believe it.

As a journalist, the Colorado Press Association awarded Frank their highest award, the Sweepstakes Award, for the best news story of 1980,and the Western Writers of America has twice named Frank recipient of their prestigious Spur Award.

My husband made me read this wonderfully written story by Frank Roderus. He said it deserved to win the Western Writers of America Spur Award, and it did, which is not mentioned here in the advertising or by the other two reviewers. To be quite honest, I found myself on a roller coaster ride while reading it. There were times it took me into a deep valley with Joe Potter's emotions, and at others I felt uplifted by his actions. By the end of this tale of a man who found it hard to live with himself, my heart was wrenched with empathy for him. This book is listed as a western, but there are no gunfights in the streets of some town, no cattle drive from Texas to Montana, no wagon train crossing the Plains, no gold rush, no John Wayne coming over the hill with the cavalry or wearing a lawman's badge. No, none of that is in POTTER'S FIELDS. This is the story of a man at war with himself within his soul. If you aren't touched by Joe Potter's plight, then you have no spirit. Read it and find out for yourself.

In my opinion few writers can handle a novel where very few characters are onstage. Mr Roderus has given us a great novel. I read Potter's Fields at one sitting and I am sure that you will too. I was right there with Joe Potter in that line shack. I looked around and saw how miserable and ornery and cold it was and how a man carries more than just his emotions around with him. And how the tenderness of a woman is something that man ignores to his detriment. In short, this book is great -- buy it.

Did not like the evil In the main character, he hated women & was full of evil. Do not like this type of story. The only good part was that he died in the end.

This was a story about a terrible man and the way he treated people. I would not recommend it to anyone.
