A beautifully obscure musical treasure, Pottery Pie is one of my best finds. Maria & Geoff each take five singularly distinct songs, and with their unique talents, finely craft the whole lot into a delicious dish indeed. 'Catch It' starts the feast off with Geoff lending voice to Eric Von Schmidt's good advice on opportunity, participation, & responsibility. Next, Maria gets inside of Dylan's 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' like it was her own skin, tingling with the adept fingers of Bill Keith on pedal steel. 'New Orleans Hopscop Blues' is a rousing, romping Louisiana ride through a maze of piano, trombone, guitar, and bass, hauling Geoff all over the place with those wild pipes of his---awe-inspiring! 'Trials, Troubles, Tribulations', a traditional spiritual, sung by Maria with simple understated elegance, is again highlighted with Keith's tasteful slide guitar. A poetical renovation of the 1930s 'Prairie Lullabye' is borne of Geoff's tender vocal, freshly adorned with bassoon, clarinet, french horn, and violin. When listening to Maria sing the acapella 'Guide Me, O Great Jehovah', I find her voice so compellingly beautiful---almost hypnotic---that I long for my brief entrancement to linger on, and lull me further under her spell... Maria's lilting take on 'Chauffer Blues' more R&B than rock, is playful and enduring, unlike the somewhat heavy-handed, and thus, rather dated Jefferson Airplane version from the same era. Then we whistle our way into Geoff's infectious 'Brazil'---riotous ear candy, eccentric, exotic, humorous, and delightfully bizarre.Read more ›

Geoff and Maria made 2 albums for Warner Bros. back in the 70's - following their success with Jim Kweskin's Jug Band & before Maria's solo recordings (which are all recommended). If you enjoy good-time music sung from the heart and played by Genuine Musicians, then this CD is for you. (As is its companion "Sweet Potato"). Highly recommended for fans of Geoff and Maria.
