About the Author

Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There's dinner, the dogs, the two kids, and her violent IBS--which is under control thanks to medication except for occasional multi-tonal farts. Her first love and crowning achievement is her thriving career as the weirdest mom on the block. Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when--along with the animals and humans in her house--the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra's ear. Insomnia was the gateway to plots that wouldn't give up, wouldn't let go. Now they stalk her everywhere. Halfway through making lunches, a twist takes hold and--fingers full of peanut butter--she finds somewhere, anywhere to write it down. Debra lives in Maryland with her family. You can find her at and on Twitter @Debra_Anastasia. But be prepared...

More About the Author

There are a lot of eyes in Debra Anastasia's house in Maryland. First, her own creepy peepers are there, staring at her computer screen. She's made two more sets of eyes with her body, and the kids they belong to are amazing. The poor husband is still looking at her after 17 years of marriage. At least he likes to laugh. Then the freaking dogs are looking at her--six eyeballs altogether, though the old dog is blind. And the cat watches her too, mostly while knocking stuff off the counter and doing that internal kitty laugh when Deb can't catch the items fast enough.

In between taking care of everything those eyes involve, Debra creates pretend people in her head and paints them on the giant, beautiful canvas of your imagination. What an amazing job that is. The stories hit her hard while driving the minivan or shaving her legs, especially when there's no paper and pen around. In all of the lies she writes hides her heart, so thank you for letting it play in your mind.

Debra has a smattering of books in a few genres. There are two in the Seraphim Series and three in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series with a prequel, Poughkeepsie Begins in the near future. Fire Down Below is the first in the comedic Gynzaule Series. The second, Fire in the Hole, will be published in late 2015. The Revenger, a dark paranormal romance will debut this summer. And last, a novella called Late Night with Andres is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. (So go get it right now, please!)

Oh, where do I start?! I've read Poughkeepsie 5 times straight through. On the last read, I told myself I would take my time and find the secret behind why I loved this book so much. Nope, got sucked right back into it and couldn't put it down. I loved it so much I bought five copies for Christmas presents...something I never do. No one in my fams really reads like I do, but I gave it to them anyways. I came away from this book feeling like I wanted to be a better person and I wanted to share that with everyone else.

Now, with all my fan girl stuff do want to tell you that I didn't think Poughkeepsie was perfect. Technically there were a few proofs that could have been corrected, but that's with almost every book nowadays, including my own, so I don't fault for that. My bestie and I have had a grand time picking this book apart technically and discovering that Ms. Anastasia has managed to break a few of the rules that we've been told time and again not to do... and guess what... it didn't distract us from the story.

All three couples in this book are rich, vibrant people. I've teased that they felt like real people even. I'm not joking. The magic in this book is in the normal...the subtle. It's the chemistry between the two sisters when their dad is out of the room. It's the serious love that these three men share for each other when no one else would love them. It's the vomit behind the bushes and the offer of mouthwash after...I know it's gross, but it's my fave moment in the book. Hey, it's me, of course I'm going to love the vomit scene.

But, if you're following along you'll get the big picture. It's not because Ms. Anastasia has over the top language in her dialogue--even though she does. It's not because Poughkeepsie is the perfect book.

about this book.
This was a beautiful, touching, humorous and a sometimes heartbreaking book.
I thought this book was going to be a depressing and put off reading it for a while. So glad I finally picked it up.
the character of Blake was so well written and his unfolding relationship with Livia is just beautiful.
I'm not good at reviews and can't do justice to this book with my words.
I loved all the characters in this book. Beckett and Kyle were just wonderful and both had me chuckling out loud at times.
The relationship between Cole, Beckett and Blake was so well done and though each went their own ways, they had a deep love for each other that really came through in the writing.
I know when a book has been something out of the ordinary when I am still thinking about it long after turning the last page and this book definitely falls into that category.
I've put a few people onto this book and none have been disappointed.
This is a rare gem of a book. So go and read, devour and enjoy

Livia McHugh is a grad student that rides the train everyday and night to and from school. She's friendly and smiles to everyone at the train station. Then she begins to take notice of a homeless man. He's always there and offers her a smile in return. Blake Hartt counts her smiles everyday. He's at the station to watch for Livia day and night. He lives for her smile. Blake believes that despite the pain from his past and his delusions of who is today, Livia can see the real him. This unlikely pair go through many obstacles to get to their happy place together. Between, overcoming the stigma of being homeless, crazy ex's, mental illness, and extremely dysfunctional families, Livia and Blake create a beautiful love story.

My Take:
I've been fortunate lately to come across some really great reads. This was one of them. It's just so different. I LOVE that! On occasion when I read a book description, I think, "hmm...not sure about this." Then it becomes an all-time favorite. Blake and Livia's story was one of those for me. I really couldn't believe how they could find a way to live their love and overcome the issues of being homeless. They made it work and made it special. I think the overall story that the entire cast creates in excellent. I loved the supporting characters and felt that they could be strong leads in the story. Beckett is sooooo bad, but sooooo good too. There's just something about a really tough guy that's just hot! The ONLY thing I wasn't crazy about was the amount of violence at certain spots. It was a bit overdone and in my opinion the story didn't need to go that deep into the violence. Overall, I loved it and it will be a kept book in my personal library!

I had Poughkeepsie in my to-read list on GoodReads for quite a while. I had never read anything by this author so I guess I just put it off. It was a recommended read but I kept getting distracted by other books, whether borrowed or purchased. I decided it was long enough and started reading Poughkeepsie late at night. I put off the laundry, dinner and many other "chores" to finish it. Now, not only is this book in my top 5 favorite reads, it has been recommended by me to many others. This author really made me believe that there is kindness/humanity left in the world. I fell in love with almost all of the characters, so much that I can't really pin point which one is my absolute favorite. Without going into details, so as to not spoil it for others who may read this, there are characters who are unlikeable at first, but then you realize that one cannot judge until you know exactly where they come from. I felt like I was at the train station and cheering for them all. I wanted to cry for the characters throughout the book but then the author had me laughing too. I was a bit bummed when I finished, only to realize there will be a part 2. Hooray for Ms. Anastasia. She is one kick-ass author!
