4.0 out of 5 stars No-frills mower at bargain price
The mower has nothing beside a spinning blade--no self-drive, no throttle control, no choke, no bagging options, and best of all no high price tag. The handle has a safety shut-off lever which is the only way to kill the mower; it's easy to hold back and does not give any hand fatigue. To start, pump the priming bulb three times and pull the cord. My unit starts within...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok...
I don't know what the deal is but the wheels seem like they are about to fall off of this thing. everything else is nice but the wheels are sloppy as heck. I hate the stupid safety bar on the handle. First thing I did was disconnect it and run a lever to control on and off. Otherwise, it cuts grass. It's not "heavy Duty"... It's more like a regular mower with big...

This review is from: Poulan PO550N22SH 22-inch 550 Series Briggs & Stratton Gas Powered Side Discharge/Mulch Lawn Mower With High Rear Wheels (Lawn & Patio)
My unit starts within the second or third pull when cold, on the first pull when hot. Engine has enough power to mow through higher grass that's a little damp--you can tell the engine is a smaller powerplant, though, when going through high grass. On the other hand, without any self-drive all the power is used for mowing. Mulching ability is acceptably good but not stellar. The factory-set throttle is not user-adjustable. My unit's run speed cycles up and down quite a lot, giving the mower a slow sort of pulsing/thrumming sound as you mow. I've worried about that but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the unit or operation. The blade height is very adjustable on front and rear wheels; the adjustments have a lot of range. The gas tank is bigger than most new mowers (a big plus in my book). Construction overall is exactly what you'd expect. The unit is light enough that mowing my 1/3-acre yard with it is actually less fatiguing than using a larger/heavier unit with self-drive. I'm glad I picked this one up and saved a few hundred bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars very pleased, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Poulan PO550N22SH 22-inch 550 Series Briggs & Stratton Gas Powered Side Discharge/Mulch Lawn Mower With High Rear Wheels (Lawn & Patio)
The mower arrived in excellent condition, was easy to assemble and started on the first pull. After using it for a couple of weeks, it still starts on the first pull every time. I'm very happy with it.

We needed a new lawnmower, and checked out our local Sears store. For a comparable model, they wanted a bit more than a $30 premium over the price of this model from Amazon.

We never ordered a lawnmower from Amazon, and decided to give it a try. Overall the experience hasn't been bad.

The mower came in a very large box, and was a bit heavy. The driver asked for assistance removing it from the UPS truck. Once opened, the lawnmower unfolds without any need for tools. It just pulls out and fully opens.

You'll need to add oil (which is included in a separate container with the mower), and of course gas. Doing this took just a few minutes. We primed it a few times (that is pulled slowly to give the oil a chance to circulate a bit). On our first real pull, it started right up.

Generally this mower starts on the first or 2nd pull from a cold start. If it hits something or stalls in very tall grass, it is easy to restart, usually only requiring a single pull.

One of the rear wheels is a bit off (it isn't correctly positioned). There is nothing wrong with the wheel itself, but rather the mount the wheel is attached to, it makes the wheel not point straight. It is off by a bit less than 10 degrees. This doesn't look perfect, but turns out to not have much of an effect on the mowers function. The funky wheel is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars.

This mower has no speed controls. It has handled low and tall grass without much of an issue. Once in a while on tall grass it did stall, but once the bottom was cleared, it restarted without any problem. It is a quiet mower.

In my opinion it is worth the price. Quality control could be a bit better. Though you may just get what you pay for. The mower is lightweight, but not so lightweight that it seems cheap. Just an easy to push, reasonable mower for a small to medium yard.

It arrives with a side discharge installed, and will blow grass toward the right (as you face it to push). There is also a mulch pad included, to block discharge and convert this into a mulching mower.

We have found this to be a reasonable mower for our needs, and prefer it being a bit lightweight compared to our older mower. It is easier to push around. I'm not 100% certain, but think it is a 5.5 HP mower.
