The engine failed by october with oil in the cylinder.

If the throttle control spring comes off or breaks, the mower will either stop running or will run at really weak rpms and not be good for anything.

I expected a Poulan Pro series mower to be a quality machine.

I purchased this mower in late June. The engine failed by october with oil in the cylinder. The retailer couldn't take it back because it has fuel. I took the mower to a Briggs & Stratton authorized repair shop ($45 charge). The shaft was bent, I was told that I must have hit something with he blade and that the warranty would not cover it. My daughters mow the lawn and claim to not have hit anything. I tend to believe them since there are no dings on the blade larger than a thin pencil lead. Poulan would not help (through their online assistance) since they "only made the deck", and that I should contact Briggs & Stratton. This engine had between 10 and 15 hours residential use on it. My last mower (Briggs & Stratton engine by the way) lasted 13 years and survived several bent bldes. The Briggs & Stratton 550 Series engine does not appear to be suitable for the intended use.

The first time I used it, it started quickly and worked well. However, after sitting idle for a few months, it would no longer start as a result of a fuel blockage.

Found out how to make it work. In the Spring, dump all the old gasoline out. Pour in brand new gasoline and wait 24 hours. Then it will start like a charm. Never had a lawn mower like this before. My neighbor blames the gasoline. I am not so sure. Did not try Stabil in Fall, but that would be an interesting experiment.

We purchased this mower for light duty on a small yard. It ran fine for about a month. After 2 months it ran choppy, then died and will not start again. I am embarrassed at the quality of this mower. The run handle also just fell off. Last time ever for Poulan and me.

The mower worked like a champ the first couple times I used it. I never used the original blades. I instead used the Mamba blades because the house I was using it on had a lot of pine cones. Like I said though, it worked great the first couple of times, but then it started to get a little bit sluggish, and the mower began to have oscillations while running. I knew it wasn't the gas or the plug. I then looked at the filter. It was covered in dirt. I then cleaned it and it has been working pretty good so far. I have had it for almost 2 years now, and I haven't really had anymore issues. It still doesn't run like it was when it was new, but it gets the job done. I think the $225 investment has been well worth it. Just make sure to check the oil regularly because this thing can drink some oil.

Open the shipping box, set the push bar to the proper height, put in oil and gas and your're mowing ! Great Mower. Easy to start and the large rear wheels make it easy to push. The 5.5 HP Briggs & Stratton mower has plenty of power. There is NO throttle control, but the engine rpm is plenty fast enough to cut through tall thick lawn grasses. I like the idea of not having to replace a broken/sticking throttle assemble. Mower deck is made of thick steel which should last many years. Nothing special, nothing fancy . . . . just a well built mower at a very good price !

I purchased the mower through a local tractor/farm store last year and they no longer carry the Poulan Pro line any more. I found this out when I went to purchase a new air filter and they don't carry it. I checked the Poulan web site and they don't have one either.

I use this mower to mower around the horse barn, slopes that are too steep for a lawn tractor or have obstacles too close to get the tractor into. It accomplishes this OK, but I have had issues with the mower ...

1. The air filter clogged up and I have not been able to locate a replacement locally or on-line. Luckily, banging it on the concrete barn floor dislodged enough dirt that it is happy again. (When the mower starts surging or the RPM starts oscillating, check the air filter.)
2. There is no throttle level to control the speed. The mower runs at full rpm EXCEPT if the throttle return spring has broken. (As it did in my case when it caught on some brush I was trying to mower under.). If the throttle control spring comes off or breaks, the mower will either stop running or will run at really weak rpms and not be good for anything. Again, I could not locate the specific part, but picked up a replacement spring from ACE hardware. On my version of this mower, you need to remove the air filter housing to reach the throttle controller. It will be attached to an L shaped white plastic part next to the engine housing.

My mower does start on the first pull (after priming) and it does run okay aside from fixing the above issues when they happen. Compared to the Sears mower that I had to 20 years, this mower is very cheaply made and I seriously doubt it will last as long as the Sears one.

Like so many others who have reviewed this mower, I have to say this was a waste of money. I got one season of mowing out of it and now the engine has died. I expected a Poulan Pro series mower to be a quality machine. Wrong. Stay away from Poulan!
