Book Description

January 1, 1990 0444885579 978-0444885579 1
This new reference work provides a comprehensive, critical review of literature and current practice in poultry breeding and genetics. The authors invited to contribute to the book have all been carefully chosen from the world community of poultry scientists and scholars to ensure that specialized topics were reviewed by those well-qualified to do so. In forty-two chapters, genetic knowledge on eight species of poultry, all of which have commercial importance, is reviewed. These species are: chicken, turkey, Japanese quail, guinea fowl, ring-necked pheasant, domestic duck, muscovy duck, and goose. Each chapter includes an extensive bibliography of technical literature, and author and subject indexes complete the work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The number 1 book on Poultry genetics, November 6, 2000

This review is from: Poultry Breeding and Genetics (Hardcover)
Crawford's Poultry Breeding and Genetics is the definitive collection of information on this subject. It is well worth the cost as it contains informaion you would spend years trying to collect from other sources if it could even all be found. It is divided into logical sections (for each kind of poultry) on form, color, deformities, and disease resistance. Beyond listing dominant and recessive genes, it goes into a description of how the gene affects the bird or bird part to produce the desired effect. It discusses which breeds usually carry each gene. It cites the person and the study that came up with the information. It is not a book for people new to the mechanisims of heredity, so if you have forgotten that you need to review it first. Crawford assumes you understand the the vocabulary and workings of genetics already.
