This review is from: Pounamu: maori Jade of New Zealand (Paperback)
I was asked to catalogue and research a Maori greenstone collection recently, and read through all that was available at the library and online. This book is very short with few photographs (Te Papa's museum books are gorgeous for photography) but it is very densely packed with information, and worth more than the rest of the coffeetable books for detail.

A great short introduction to New Zealand Greenstone,

This review is from: Pounamu: maori Jade of New Zealand (Paperback)
This is only a small book at 37 pages long, but it's a great introduction to the history of New Zealand jades. Pounamu is the maori word for the native jade and it's history as a man made object rightly starts with them. This book outlines the various places in New Zealand that jade is found and how it was used and worked by the maori's before and after European arrival in New Zealand.
The book is illustrated in colour and has some fine images of old jade. If you know little about the fine pieces produced in New Zealand by the Maori this little book is a good place to start as it's packed full of useful information. |
