This is the book that I've been wanting to write for a long time. Why? Because water fasting transformed my life more than 10 years ago. If you've read any of my other books, then you know the sob story. I was obese and trapped in a destructive cycle of binge eating. I had lost all hope for a better life and locked myself in a trash-filled apartment to eat myself to death. It was at that dark moment that I first thought of fasting.

Out of nowhere, the idea came to me that I had to stop eating for 30 days so my mind, body and spirit could detox and heal. I had vaguely heard of water fasting in the past, but it wasn't anything that I was intimately familiar with. In desperation, I threw away the last of the pizza and beer; I began to fast. Things did not go very well. Six hours later, I was stricken with intense hunger, nausea and headaches. Fear and rage weren't too far behind. Needless to say, the acute physical and mental symptoms took me down for the count; two hours later I was at the nearest donut shop gorging (medicating).

I had tried to diet many times and always ended up binging. So this latest debacle was really nothing new. But something WAS different. I was intrigued by the cavalcade of symptoms that had emerged. Having worked as a writer and researcher, I was filled with a million questions about fasting. I remember thinking: "I have only not eaten in a few hours. Why am I feeling so physically and emotionally sick? What in the world is going on?"  I felt like the drug addict who ran out of dope and had gone into withdrawal. "What?" I said aloud. "Could fasting have incited some kind of withdrawal? But why? How is that possible?"

I became a man on a mission. I devoured countless books on fasting, both religious and secular. I wanted to know what happens to the body when one fasts.Over a period of 18 months, I gathered volumes of information about water fasting, juice fasting, dry fasting, liquid diet fasting, religious fasting and intermittent fasting.I felt that I had found the truth and discovered a solution to my sickness and obesity. What was the truth? It was not very flattering, but I came to realize that I was a Food Addict. I saw my life with unprecedented clarity.

"Robert," I said to myself, "you're a full-blown food addict. You need to do a 30-day water fast to lose weight and purge your body of the trash you've been eating for so many years." The plan was set. I started my first 'official' water fast around March of 1998.  I weighed myself on Day 1 and tipped the scales at 318 pounds. I'm six feet tall, so my ideal weight is 195 to 210 pounds. I needed to lose in excess of 100 pounds!

It was very tough for the first two weeks; hunger, nausea, headaches, irritation and sleeplessness assailed me. The mind was constantly inviting me to break the fast and giving me endless reasons why it was better to abort - for now. But I had crossed the line. I was so sick and tired of being sick and tired that I grit my teeth and walked through the discomfort.On Day 40 of the fast, I got on the scale again. I closed my eyes tightly in fear of seeing numbers that would mock my hard work. When I finally peeked with my right eye, the digital scale said that I weighed 258. I had lost 60 pounds in 40 days!

Altogether, it took me 18 months to lose the last 63 pounds. Why so long? Because, rather than fasting and fasting and fasting, I realized that I needed to adopt a clean and healthy structured diet. I had to learn how to eat!  I was willing to do whatever it took. I had proven to myself (more than once) that things never worked out when I was pigheaded and did it my way. I had to learn humility; I had to reach out for help. And the effort has paid off in spades! Today, my weight fluctuates between 195 and 205. Beyond that, I haven't gained a single ounce back.

One of the most comprehensive and detailed explanations of how to carry out a fast, especially if you have never done one before. I have only ever done a fast for 24hours and was afraid to go on for longer. Robert Dave Johnston pours out his heart and gives us every detail we need to know to do it properly. I was blown away. I had no idea fasting could be such a life saver for so many ailments, not just losing weight. You won't need to buy any other book on the subject. Really well written and easy to follow too. I will be reading more of his stuff for sure.

Fasting can truly transform a person from the inside out. In this excellent book, Robert outlines not only the physical and spiritual benefits of fasting, but also provides practical advice for how to accomplish this transformational journey. He provides practical, detailed instruction and advice, and coaching and motivation to help get through the challenges every faster must face.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how to transform themselves through fasting. It works!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's very complete and gives readers a solution for quick weight loss through water fasting.

I found the detailed instructions on how to properly break a fast very helpful, and the long-term diet that's been included to prevent you from regaining the weight lost through fasting.

The book also has lots of motivation and encouragement, and I liked that the author shows you various fasting studies and their discoveries. All around great book. Very helpful. I recommend it.

I was very dissatisfied with this purchase. I am in the midst of a water fast (currently at 15 days, aiming for 22) and was hoping to gain insight concerning what the body goes through (at a scientific, physiological level) during this period, as well as insight concerning how to safely refeed after the fast. Instead, the majority of the fasting journey itself is simply Johnston rambling a bunch of motivational "You can do it!" BS without any actual knowledge of the bodily processes at any scientific level that would make the book significant. Furthermore, his refeeding scheme seems highly over-the-top and limiting of many food groups. I understand that one must take great caution during a refeeding to avoid putting the body in harm, but he sets a plan without providing any basis for this, other than the fact that he did it himself (not enough in my opinion). Finally, toward the conclusion of the book he provides a grocery list of "healthy" foods of which you should go to the grocery store and purchase immediately as you embark on your new life of good health. Many of the foods are not even healthy (pasta, oatmeal, cream of wheat? really?) and the entire list is sorely lacking in good fats that are essential to the body. He finally states that you should adhere to a strict diet for at least 6 - 9 months to maintain your weight loss results, and lays out said unrealistic and extremely limiting plan in front of you realizing that it will torment any human soul. The main goal of this shouldn't be weight loss in and of itself, but rather, good health, and his book doesn't seem to portray that. Also, there are far better nutrition plans that will allow you to eat much more (nutritious, healthy) food without having to sacrifice standard portion size. Overall, the book was a waste of time. Please don't waste your $4.

Rob writes on a level that anyone can relate with and has many anitdole stories to tell. He is honest and forthwrite about how difficult a 30 day fast is but he also gives you tools to combate the really difficult times durnig this long fast. I appreciate the whole book and I am going to read his other ones as well. I look forward to completeing this fast and finding freedom in surrendering my food addiction and lack of discipline.

I began my writing journey nearly 20 years ago as a writer of paid ads; puff pieces. If the owner of a local furniture shop wanted to toot his own horn, I was called in to interview the bloke and write a 500-word self-serving article that had little to no journalistic value.

But I didn't care because I love to write; it is what I always did naturally since I was a little boy. I even won an award for a report I did in sixth grade about outer space, the stars and galaxies. The other kids turned in maybe ten pages; my report was 60 pages. Yeah, always one for overdoing it! lol

Anyways, from writer of fluff I eventually moved up to staff writer and then to business journalist editor and copywriter. Those were some of the best years of my life. But the good times were tainted by the crippling monsters of binge eating disorder and alcohol addiction. Over time, I continued to lose control of my eating until, one day, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw that I had become almost morbidly obese. I am six feet tall and the scale said I weighed 315 pounds.

Yes, I was the guy who would wake up (come to rather) on the floor, surrounded by half-eaten burgers, pizza boxes and empty beer and whiskey bottles. The feeling was always the same: "Why the HELL Am I Still Alive?" I hated God and I cursed Him for not letting me die. The rage and hatred (mostly at myself) fed more increasingly destructive episodes with binge eating disorder. The moment I opened my eyes, all I cared about was food, eating and more eating (and, of course, drinking).

I began to see that the binging was not something new; it has actually been with me from a very early age. I had an aunt who enjoyed spoiling me during my visits by packing her cupboards and fridge with all kinds of fattening foods and pastries. I would go step into that house and spend most of my time gorging on every piece of food in sight. I recall going back home on Sunday evenings and feeling like I was about to explode.

Not to much time later I began to purge so that I could relieve myself of the fullness so I could eat some more. Before long, my entire life was about binging and purging. I lost my job at the paper, became unemployable and isolated in a ransacked apartment for weeks with all the shades down and wearing the same black, baggy clothing. I stopped answering the telephone, abandoned my friends and activities and sank into a deep state of depression that made me almost catatonic. So I ate some more. Binge. Purge. Pass out. Binge. Purge. Pass out... ad nauseum.

By then I was 115 pounds overweight and very sick from intestinal toxicity and a liver condition that was getting worse. One day I started fasting basically out of desperation, but was consumed by horrible withdrawal symptoms before I could finish even eight hours without solid food.

It was like being stabbed all over my body... the detox pain was intense. I was puzzled by the bad breath, white-sticky tongue, metallic taste and dizziness that I experienced. Research later led me to the realization that the symptoms were a reflection of just how toxic my body and digestive system had become.

By that time I had spent nearly 25 years binge eating and drinking with very little interruption. I had no social life and hardly any friends. For all I cared my life was over. How dark it gets before the dawn! In an ultimate low, I received the grace, strength and resolve to launch a 40-day water fast.

The start of the fast was hell. I quit smoking cold turkey right then and there. The symptoms hit me hard and I was against the ropes many times. I don't know why I was doing this. I just knew that I had to. I could sense in my spirit that this was my chance to find some sort of life. It was very hard and painful - especially during the first 11 days of cleansing and detoxification.

But I was reborn. Fasting for weight loss, health and fitness has changed my life. It worked when traditional diets did not. I realized that, as long as I kept putting food in my body, I was not giving it the opportunity to cleanse from all the toxicity that had built up over the years.

My complete lack of control with food was a problem that only fasting was able to break. It forced me to navigate through the pains and discomfort of cleansing and detoxification. Only then did the chains of food slavery break and I was led to freedom.

Once the fasting was over, I found - to my astonishment- that I was no longer willing to just put anything in my mouth. The sacrifice of fasting and cleansing gave me a new perspective on food. This new perspective, in turn, gave me a fresh sense of discipline that had otherwise eluded me.

In short, for me diets did not work because, in reality, what I needed was to stop eating altogether for a season so my body could cleanse and heal. I tried all the diets, believe me. Yet I only grew fatter and more frustrated. Each failure usually restored me to the previous undesired weight and added another 10 to 20 pounds.

Later I realized that, at least for me, fasting and cleansing had to come BEFORE I could stick to any diet - no matter how good it was. Having lost nearly 100 pounds through juice and water fasting, I now dedicate myself to helping others interested in improving their health through this amazing, life-giving discipline.

I started the website in 2006. Over the past three years I have become an independent author with more than 20 titles on alternative medicine therapies, fasting, detoxification, health and wellness.
