5.0 out of 5 stars France Gall -- une chanteuse tres charmant!, July 15, 2002

This review is from: Best of-Poupee De Son (Audio CD)
This album is one of the prettiest things in the world.

France Gall is a living legend in her home country though hardly known outside of Europe. If you like light '60's pop, you will fall in love with this performer. She has light, airy, untrained voice and sings in a charmingly guileless manner. Plus she's a world-beating beauty, too. A rare combination of talents and gifts!

Once you buy this single-disc compilation, you'll want to give it to a friend or loved one and splurge for the 4 CD set for yourself! I can practically guarantee it!

You'll love this if you love: The Smiths, '64-'66 Beatles, Petula Clark, Lulu, Serge Gainsbourg, The Colourfield, Olivia Newton-John, Francoise Hardy, Pulp, The Cardigans, Herb Alpert, The Hollies, Stereolab, Ian & Sylvia, etc.!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute French 60's pop, March 25, 2005
This review is from: Best of-Poupee De Son (Audio CD)
I'm at the age where the epitome of beauty was Bridgette Bardot and I thought she was the sexiest French singer until I ran across France Gall. Gall's later decades was more serious singing, maybe you could compare her talent and long career to Madonna or Cher, but in terms of the quality of her songs from the 60's think more like a French Patsy Cline or Kiki Dee. If you like 60's rock n roll, you should check this anthology out (I read somewhere the Beatles liked her music in their "Hard Day's Night" era). You should also get this CD if you're a Francophile, since her songs are well enunciated (unlike most rock 'n roll of any nationality) you can easily find yourself singing along with these infectious songs. For those of you who are too young to know what the heck I'm talking about, give this CD a try if you like the Spice Girls or Lillix. "Pense a moi" is actually a nice jazz vocal, which sounds a little out of place in this anthology, but she actually had a number of these in her later repertoire. "Les Sucettes" (lollipops) was a daring double-entendre that might shock you if you think that sexually explicit songs are something new, and if you can understand some French, which provides a delightful clash with the sweetly innocent melody (if you don't understand French, it may as well be a Monkee's song). Many pop singers had a wider range, but Gall's voice had a certain...je ne sais quois!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic!, March 25, 2003
This review is from: Best of-Poupee De Son (Audio CD)
I was a huge fan of France Gall but had only listened to her 70's and 80's material...little did I know how delightful and magical her 60's work turned out to be. After a day or two I have been playing it non-stop!

France is the ultimate "femme-enfant" (child-woman), and her voice reflects her innocence.

Pay special attention to the songs written by the illustrious Serge Gainsbourg...
