Book Description

March 2003
This reissue of an out-of-print treasure of Canadian literature is one of the best accounts we have of a west coast community. Port Simpson is located just south of the Nass River, an area largely inhabited by the Nisga'a people. In the 1920s, Helen Meilleur attended a one-room school on the Native reserve here, where her father ran the general store. Meilleur combines town history; Indian attacks, gold-seekers, missionaries, visiting royalty, with her personal stories of an exciting childhood in this remote community, including her acquaintances with the Native people and travelling to school by steamship.
