This review is from: Poverty, AIDS and Hunger: Breaking the Poverty Trap in Malawi (Hardcover)
Here is a relatively upbeat book about poverty in an African country, Malawi. There are tremendous problems due to the low level of economic development. After a brief summary of the nation's history, the text delves into issues like the high mortality rates. There is a strong inverse correlation between the health and poverty. Malaria, tubercolosis, parasites, malnutrition and, increasingly, HIV/AIDS, beset the population.
Of these, the book devotes the most space to AIDS. Described accurately as a pandemic. With dire effects on the young and elderly. Agricultural production is also impacted, which is especially bad in a predominantly rural nation. Various attempts to combat AIDS are documented. Focusing on education, counselling and testing. One promising sign is that all blood in Malawi is now screened for HIV and syphilis. International organisations like WHO have been instrumental in providing financial and technical assistance. But much remains undone. |
