Gr 6-9-Two introductory volumes about controversial issues. Each book presents a chronological examination of global attitudes, events, and legislation relating to the topic. Poverty examines divided societies, the Great Depression, famines, and government responses to the problem. Censorship investigates the Victorian legacy; the role of the media; government regimes; and censorship based on sex, national security, and religion. Recent developments such as motion-picture ratings and the growth of the Internet are also included. Both books discuss major worldwide events that have influenced their subjects. They contain numerous color and black-and-white photographs and sidebars labeled either "Key Moment" or "Opinion," which feature historical quotes. The "Overview" series (Lucent) and "Opposing Viewpoints" series (Greenhaven) examine these topics as well, but tend to focus on the United States. These two titles would be valuable additions to libraries needing contrasting opinions on controversial issues with a wider point of view.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA
