5.0 out of 5 stars Kid's Powwow songs
We purchased the Kid's Powwow Song's tape for our son, a Yakama tribal member, so that he could begin listening to more powwow music and grow to appreciate it. He enjoys the tape and we used it at the Title IX summer school that I organized last year (summer 1999). Most of the children had never heard powwow music before as we are living in southeast Alaska. The...

2.0 out of 5 stars surprised
I saw this band live at the New Orleans Jazz Festival and they had a great performance. I purchased this CD on-line and thought I would hear more good music. I was wrong. The American TV icons injected into their songs (e.g. Mighty Mouse, Flinstones) seemed almost blasphamous to the proud rich heritage of Indian music. I might have simply missed the groups artistic...

5.0 out of 5 stars Kid's Powwow songs, May 7, 2000

We purchased the Kid's Powwow Song's tape for our son, a Yakama tribal member, so that he could begin listening to more powwow music and grow to appreciate it. He enjoys the tape and we used it at the Title IX summer school that I organized last year (summer 1999). Most of the children had never heard powwow music before as we are living in southeast Alaska. The children really enjoyed the tape and it held their attention. It is a good tape for Indian children who are not able to attend powwows regularly so that they can learn about the importance of Indian music in their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pow-wow music for young and old alike, June 18, 2001

Our entire family enjoys this recording. We are a Native family and love to sing along to this CD. This music is a perfect example of how Native culture takes elements from the dominant culture (such as children's popular culture from the past couple of decades) and incorporates those elements into our traditional culture (often to humorous effect). Our toddlers especially like "Mickey Mouse" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." But you certainly do not have to be Native to enjoy this. Our kids' non-Native friends go crazy about this music, too. Black Lodge is a great drum with a lot of good recordings. I hope they will produce another children's recording soon! They obviously had a lot of fun making this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pow wow music breaks the stereo-types, October 28, 2002

This is such a wonderful CD! For kids who are native and think pow wow music is for the old folks, think again. For old folks who think pow wow music has to be somber and serious, think again! We love this at our house, and sing the songs often. Anytime someone mentions 'fifty-cents' we can't help breaking into song. Thank goodness for a native CD that's FUN! My favorite is when they sing, "Oh my gosh, it's Mighty Mouse!"

Mighty Mom

My granddaughter knows all the words to some of the more popular kid's powwow songs now. She loves the CD and so does "grandmommy".

5.0 out of 5 stars Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto too!, January 27, 2004
This review is from: Kids' Pow-Wow Songs (Audio CD)
Although my daughter is only a year old, she loves bouncing to this music and if she's crying in the car, she calms down immediately. I enjoy the funny lyrics to these songs and am thankful that this isn't the average New Agey, saccharine children't music that fills the shelves. We've purchased this CD for my daughter's non-Indian friends and they love it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your child deserves this CD!, November 30, 2002

I am not a tribal member, but I love this CD. The members of Black Lodge really understand that play is a child's work. By letting them "practice" being adults with fun lyrics, they are developing an interest that may change a child's and a community's future. My first experience with the CD was in a tribal school, but now I'm buying it for my nieces and nephews. I want them to see how culture is just a different way to express lots of things that we all feel and enjoy. And I want them to remember the friends they met while I worked there. Thank you, Black Lodge! And thank you, Amazon, for making it so easy to find.
