5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Insight, December 27, 2009
This review is from: Pow Wow Trail Episode 1: The Drum (DVD)
To produce this documentary, they really went out of their way to speak to the only true authorities on Native culture: our own tribal elders. As a powwow drummer/singer and a teacher to younger drummer/singers, it is very important that the historic teachings and protocols be reinforced alongside the learning of the actual songs. In all of our ways, everything has a "why" and should be followed and executed exactly as taught with care taken to remember them throughout your life and to pass them along just as you received them. Deviations and cultural mixing-and-matching are what will ultimately end the sanctity of our beliefs and traditions, in my humble opinion. The stories told in this series answer many questions we are asked at our powwows, though often, all we give the asker is a generic answer because the original teachings are too complex to be surmised in a single phrase and we are too busy at the moment to offer a complete discussion. These are must-see productions for a new powwow-goer, and even some those who have been on the Powwow Trail for many years will find something new in them.

Great video! It is a bit over the heads of Middle School students, but is fantastic for a more mature audience. GREAT info and captivating.
