I liked this book, but was utlimately a little underwhelmed. I've skied Alta numerous times over the years, and have found myself finally exploring the hike-to terrain the last couple years. I'm only out there a week each year, so the hiking really depends on me hitting good snowfall. I've been lucky lately. The first time you go all the way out High Traverse is a sphincter-tightening exploration. Once you know where you're going it can still be dicey. Even when you're feeling confident, an exposed rock that sends your ski in the wrong direction can unsettle you for a bit. I was hoping for this book to give me a better feel for how to access some of the more exotic and hard to reach lines, like Eagle's Nest or Christmas Tree or maybe some pictures of useful you-are-here landmarks, but, for me at least, it's a little sketcy on usable details. Perhaps I had outsized expectations, but I was hoping to see photos of the tops/entries of the runs from the traverses, that kind of thing. This book is just aerial shots of the mountains and then narrative about the various trails. It's helpful if you know where you're going already, in which case you don't really need this book. If you have some decent local knowledge, you can study these pics and descriptions and get a sense of where you want to go, but it requires some attention and care (which is in keeping with the Alta ethos, isn't it?).

The pros are, in my opinion, that he does a great job dissecting Baldy and Germania and Greeley. And his love for Alta is clear and contagious. The descriptions of the Supreme area and Sugarloaf area are pretty thin, though.

I would recommend this to anyone travelling to Utah to go skiing at Alta. Snowbird and Alta are my all time favorite spots to ski in the US and Canada- have not made it to Europe so this guide book is helpful and you will want to go back because the snow is so great so just buy it and enjoy your trip!

I ski Alta each year for a month. I am not from the area, and wondered what the various runs were about, Alta has a lot of unmarked terrain, and the trail map, while helpful, is not overly complete. To increase my knowledge I picked up Brad’s book. It has proven to be not only a complete guide, I enjoy reading what he has to say. Now I know what I am getting into when I head for the more audacious runs. If you love Alta, pick this book up, to know her is to love her that much more.

Informative, but I find that even though I already have some familiarity with Alta the illustrations/descriptions for some runs are a little vague in terms of locating them.
