Tall grass prairie. Home of native people. Heart of a prosperous farm community. Host to a massive military munitioins plant. The Sauk Prairie has been a focal point of American history for as long as history has been recorded here.

Focusing on the Badger Army Ammunition Plant, known as the Badger Ordnance Works during World War II, Powder People and Place presents a series of stories that merge into a seamless history of the powder plant, the people whose lives it changed and the place where they came together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must" for all Wisconsin community library collections, April 3, 2004
This review is from: Powder, People and Place: Badger Ordnance Works and the Sauk Prairie (Paperback)
Michael J. Goc's Powder, People And Place: Badger Ordnance Works And The Sauk Prairie is a 404-page compendium of stories that put together a cohesive picture of the powder plant Badger Ordnance Works, and how it changed the lives of those who lived near it and labored for it since its beginning in 1941 through its eventual closure in 1975 with the end of the Vietnam War. A thoughtful, well-researched, deftly written, and detailed reminiscence of a microcosm of Wisconsin history, Powder, People And Place is a "must" for all Wisconsin community library collections and a seminal contribution to Wisconsin History academic reference shelves and supplemental reading lists as well. Michael Goe has done such a fine and seminal work that it could well serve as a template for other specialized community and regional histories.
