This is a very sturdy, handsome table. The top has a very smooth finish, the color is a deep red and very attactive.
The reason I titled this "butcher block-appearance" is that, although the top appears to be 4" thick, but is actually hollow. The wood top is only about 1-1/4" thick. I you rap on the top, it definitely sounds hollow. This explains why this table to so much less expensive than others, which presumably have full thickness butcher block tops. This is more a truth in labeling issue. I was disappointed that it didn't have the heft of a full thickness solid wood top, but practically speaking, I don't plan on doing any heavy cutting or chopping. Assembly is straight forward, but my box did not contain directions. Googling "powell butcher block assembly instructions" led me to a website that has a link to pdf instructions. Be carefully using power to place screws that enter the legs, as this wood is relatively soft and will strip. Given the price, I am pleased with the appearance and build qualitiy, and I would recommend it.

I love this island it is sturdy, looks beautiful in my kitchen. My husband was dubious about having it in the middle of the kitchen, but he has been won over. It totally changes the appearance of our kitchen!
