seems very cheaply made, January 21, 2008
This review is from: A-Power 3.5" USB 2.0 Aluminum Ext HDD Enclosure w/LED (Blk) (Electronics)
I just bought one of these after good results with a different enclosure, so I have something to actually compare it to.
I have tried to get this thing to work with two different hard drives (one 40GB Maxtor, one a 250GB Seagate), connecting it to each of a Win98, Win XP and Vista machine. I have not gotten it to connect to ANY of them, which my other HD enclosure worked pretty flawlessly right off the bat.
There is no instruction manual for the hardware (not that it is really needed - unless you have a problem), but I tried every possible jumper configuration with no luck. The manual gives software installation instructions only.
I honestly think that the cheap "ON/OFF" switch is the problem; the drive powers up and the front light comes on, but the slightest movement and the power goes off and you have to jiggle the button and press it a few times before the light will come on again.
When I plug the cable in, Windows recognizes the hardware, but won't connect to it, and when I look down at the drive, the light is out AGAIN.
Another thing I notice is that this thing gets HOT very quickly.

Bad bad bad..., May 16, 2007

I had a 300GB Seagate hard drive in one of these and the heat dispersal was so lousy that the hard drive overheated within an hour. Never buy this product. Majority of the time price does dictate quality.

Excellent HD enclosure for the price, August 17, 2009
This review is from: A-Power 3.5" USB 2.0 Aluminum Ext HDD Enclosure w/LED (Blk) (Electronics)
I am surprised to see the complaints and the negative reviews about this product. I have been using it for 6 months and it is working like a charm with every single HD that I have upto 500GB. The only negative thing may be it does not support SATA and you cannot expect to get an enclosure for $10 that supports all HD anyways. I have to mention the data transfer rate of this product, it is absolutely amazing! You feel like you are transferring data between internal HD's. That is correct that it does not have a fancy cooling system but come on guys it is just a basic enclosure, you are not supposed to leave it on for hours. Just transfer your data, back them up, do whatever you wanna do and turn it off, it is not overheating within an hour at all!
I used at least 5 different HD enclosure and this is not the best one, this is the best one for the price. If you are looking for a basic enclosure I strongly recommend this one. People should write reviews depending on the price/performance rate of each product, not only the performance or price of a product. You cannot expect anything better than this for 10 bucks!
