Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Rite Zairois a liturgy developed in Kinshasa, Zaire, and approved by the Vatican in 1988 for the Catholic dioceses of Zaire--is case study as well as inspiration for Egbulem. Much of the book is devoted to an account of the origins of this Zairean mass and a critical reading of its form and content. The narrative is accessible and informative; the critical reading is an important contribution to discussion of "enculturation" as opposed to "adaptation" in Christian liturgical practice. Egbulem intends the discussion also as an inspiration to the development of African American liturgies in the U.S. His attention to the structure of the mass and its place in the life of a community contributes to the post^-Vatican II discussion of local liturgies in a universal church and should prove helpful to readers interested in the development of such liturgies.
