I believe that this book is must reading for people who are starting to get involved in a relationship. The dismal success rate for marriages in this country is related to the lack of commitment. The author calls this the "Maybe I do" generation. People don't make commimtment and don't even plan to make a commitment. I have given copies of this book to two young couples who will be getting married in the next twelve months.

At last, a book that doesn't just push commitment, but actually defines it! Worth the effort and price just for that double-edged insight alone. Stanley, using his usual research-based insights on what works/what doesn't in marriage and relationships, builds a case for saying commitment is worth the effort. Having seen him speak, checked out his blog on deciding vs. sliding and actually met him (though he won't remember), Scott Stanley may well be the best marriage researcher today in the spirit of John Gottman and others of that generation. Digest this, and you'll see why people don't stay committed and what it takes to realize a turn-around is not only possible, but worth carrying a long term relationship through its various seasons (married 43 years here myself). Get this and get a few copies for friends, your group, your church or synagogue, and learn together. A definitive well done push for the true "C" word needing reentry into American vocabulary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone seeking an honest look at having a fulfilling relationship, July 29, 2008

Scott Stanley is an incredible researcher and writer, this book does not disappoint. If you read "Fighting for you Marriage" this book is just as jam-packed with usable information. There is a lot of solid research to back up his propositions, but the book is written in a way that anyone could understand.
