This review is from: The Power in Compassion : Transforming the Correctional Culture (Paperback)
Let me first say that I do not work in the correctional field. This book, however, speaks to the soul of an independent thinker needing to speak their mind with compassion and deliver their message. Well-written and good reading - this book is a must for anyone looking to transform themselves in today's confused world. Thank you Ms. O'Connor for your book. Please let us hear more from you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Power in Compassion: Transforming the Correctional Cultu, August 14, 2001

This review is from: The Power in Compassion : Transforming the Correctional Culture (Paperback)
Although I'm not in the correctional field, the book intrigued me because it's a story about a person who - instead of reacting to her circumstances only - she took a good hard look at herself and started the changes there. Those changes affected the system in which she worked. That's the way I like to do things, too, from the inside out. The correctional field offers its workers a brutal setting, with a lot of workers opting to react defensively and violently. Here, from someone who worked in the system for 16 years, is a way to survive the system and try to make it a better place, both inside and out.I like it that she wrote the book as letters to her son who was going to be a correctional officer. She wrote about the unspoken correctional culture, where the officers are invincible, but morally and emotionally affected by their work, without any effort to take support offered because taking any help would show weakness, and weakness earns you ostracism.
