Memoirs, including spiritual memoirs, are all the rage these days, and though many stand out for their reflections and wisdom, few reflect a startling new story. Rev. Matthew Whong's book reflects just that: The voice of a North Korean immigrant, whose conversion to Christian faith and subsequent life of ministry sustained him across many great divides. While most of us know about WW I and WW II, and perhaps the Vietnam war, few of us know much of the conflicts between the Asian countries of China, Korea, and Japan. Those conflicts brought immigrants to our country, and subsequently, shaped our own unique culture of people from around the world who now call this land home. A true man of the world, Rev. Whong's heart belongs to God, in this fascinating and revealing story of one man's incredible life and the faith that shaped it.

A fine book, Power of Dream, Love, Mission is about just that. Matthew (Moon) Whong was among the millions leaving their families, hoping to meet up again, in North Korea when he fled South, just before the Communists. He worked in the South Korean army, attached to American troops and learned English by translating for them. Such was the way Matthew Whong, typically, was able to stretch. An American marine helped him to get to the States to attend Warren Wilson College, where he could work for his tuition; which was fortunate, since he arrived in America with one dollar in his pocket! On to Union Theological Seminary, where the young man named Moon met and married the young Virginian nurse, Dixie. And then a call to missionary work in Brazil. These stories and some from his American pastorates hold a lot of interest for the reader and testify to a lot of faith, and not a few miracles, on the part of the writer. Highly recommended, especially for other American-immigrants (and those who work with them, teach, them, love them) who might want to compare stories.

Once I began to read "Power of Dream, Love, Mission" I found that I could not put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting. The author, a North Korean, combined the story of his life that began with an amazing adventure of fleeing the communist to escape from Northern Korea and finishing it in victory by fulfilling his dream of serving God in many places throughout the world.

Matthew Whong, after escaping the communist, was left penniless, separated from his family and alone. In one unusual experience after another he is able to reach America, graduate from college, become ordained as a minister, marry a beautiful girl, and then live and work in many places around the world. The book shares touching experiences that gave realistic insight into the adjustment a person from another land and another culture must make to live in America. This book is a story of a life and the victory of a man who let God guide and bless his life.
