Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"Helping people communicate to each other what it feels like to live in their separate, private worlds of experience" is the goal of ethical persuasion, a problem-solving strategy devised by psychiatrist Rusk (with Miller, the coauthor of Instead of Therapy ). According to this approach, a person should not try to "win" an argument but to treat an adversary with respect, understanding, caring and fairness. The authors first describe how communication breaks down during stressful negotiations, whether personal or professional, and claim that in such situations "feelings are facts." In order to work with, not against, these feelings, the authors suggest exploring the other person's point of view and clearly explaining one's own before seeking resolution. Scripted encounters in work and family settings demonstrate the technique at work. Commonsensical and relatively jargon-free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, actually has ethical advise, December 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Power of Ethical Persuasion: Winning Through Understanding at Work and at Home (Paperback)
Most books on persuasion teach you ways to find you "advesaries" weaknesses and exploit them. This book actually gives you the tools to persuade people through true understanding. It also allows the people involved to come to a decision together, so that no one feels like they were manipulated into the solution.

It is truly ethical!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Communication Ever, July 21, 2005
This review is from: The Power of Ethical Persuasion: Winning Through Understanding at Work and at Home (Paperback)
This book is the best book I've ever read and studied on communication. This is why...I can "do it" all by myself. I don't have to have the other person's agreement to follow a certain format or dynamic. This book, single-handedly increased my skill in communication over 10 fold. The information has assisted me in facilitating groups, navigating difficult situations and discussions, resolving upsets and conflicts, and has greatly boosted my self confidence in relationships.

Anyone with a sincere desire to master communication skills must have a copy and study it often. This is a true jewel among the brightly colored stones.
