About the Author

Reuben Archer Torrey (1856--1928) is respected as one of the greatest evangelists of modern times. Several years after his graduation from Yale Divinity School, he was selected by D. L. Moody to become the first dean of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. Under his direction, Moody Institute became a pattern for Bible institutes around the world. Dr. Torrey spent the years of 1903-1905 in worldwide revival campaigns, winning thousands of souls to Jesus Christ. He continued worldwide crusades for the next fifteen years while he served as the dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and pastored the Church of the Open Door in that city. Torrey longed for more Christian workers to take an active part in bringing the message of salvation through Christ to a lost and dying world. His straightforward style of evangelism has shown thousands of Christian workers how to become effective soulwinners.

Torrey reminds us that all the Christians who left a significant mark were pray-ers. Prayer is active! It is for doers. He begins with a discussion on the role of the Holy Spirit by emphasizing that we are totally dependent on Him. "If we try to take one step in our own strength, we will fail," he writes.

Dr. Torrey puts the purpose of Bible study into perspective when he advises, "Do not study the Bible for the mere gratification of intellectual curiosity but to find out how to live and how to please God." In studying the Bible, he says to do so in God's presence, asking Him to give understanding.

This book is filled with reflective statements that help you to examine life. Consider this observation he makes, "Nothing more clearly reveals a man's heart than what he chooses and what he rejects." And on living in the present, "Those who always do the thing that should be done today are successful for time and for eternity."

That's just a sampling. The wisdom contained herein makes this book well worth the price. It is a book for achievers, for people who want to make a significant difference for "time and eternity."

I picked this book up a couple of months ago, and I have not been able to put it down!!! It is simply the "fresh water" (Holy Spirit) the Evangelical Church needs in these last days!! If the Power is missing in your life, this book, through Jesus the Christ, will restore it!!!

I believe everyone should buy this book, it is one of the best ones I have read in years. R.A.Torrey is from the 1800's, so you know they didn't have the distractions that we do today. The men then really studied deeper than we do. You have the benefit's of their studies. You have to go slow with this book because it's more than just a book to read, it's a study book too. You will be blessed to read this beyond your imagination. So many of my friends are studying it out too.
