The Best Saxon Album is Glorious,
A Kid's Review

THE POWER & THE GLORY (1983)
It took me awhile to finally get it but i was glad i did because it was the best thing they ever recorded. The first thing about this album is that the lyrics (for the mostpart)are a step above that from previous albums like WHEELS OF STEEL or DENIM AND LEATHER. The song topics are diverse this time, ranging from subjects like vikings(Warrior), E.T.(Watching the Sky), the moon-landing(The Eagle Has Landed), supernatural occurances(The Midas Touch) and soilders in battle(the title track) to the standard Saxon motorcycle song's(Redline)and crowd rocker's(This Town Rocks) that they always put on their albums. The title track kicks off the album and it is one of the best album starters ever, it literaly kicks the record into overdrive. Like mentioned before, the songwritting is diverse this time instead of just songs about highways, motorcycles, and rocking the crowd which plaged every Saxon album up untill this one (not that it was a bad thing). THE POWER&THE GLORY is a exellent early british metal album and what i belive to be Saxon's swan song because after this they would start relesing albums aimed at the american market and the music was just not in the same league as this, thank god they started to make a metal come back in the mid 90's. Saxon is a very underrated group, they never enjoyed the commercial success in America like their peers did (Iron Maiden, Def Lepard, Judas Preist) butIMHO they were the definition of the NWOBHM wave which was being lead by the aformentioned bands. Certainly they could write catchy tunes while retaining the heavy metalic edge to it, but they were never really accepted in to America like the others were. If Biff is reading this, don't take it personaly, many great groups never made it big in America, what do we Americans know about music anyway? look at the crap that's considered popular and "in" today to see what i mean, christ, all you had to do was wacth the last Grammys to see the abyssmal puke we have for musical 'TALENT'.

QUESTION - ALL SAXON FANS . . . .,
By NFL Fanatic (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Power & The Glory (Audio CD)
Hey guys, the cassette version of this release had the song "Suzi Hold On" and the CD has "Midas Touch". "Suzi Hold On" appears on an earlier Saxon release (WHEELS OF STEEL), but the version on the POWER & THE GLORY is far superior. Can ANYONE tell me where to find the POWER & THE GLORY version of "Suzi Hold On" on CD?
OK, now for the review . . . I LOVE the title track "Power And The Glory" - fast riffs and some great drumming. It sould similar to DIO's "Stand Up And Shout", if you've ever heard it. "This Town Rocks" is another fast-paced, hard rocker. Saxon has had some interesting lyrical content throughout their career. They seemed to take a cue from Iron Maiden for topics like vikings ("Warrior") and fighting and war ("Power And The Glory"). We've also got the standard metal topics of motorcycles ("Redline") and crowd pleasers ("This Town Rocks") - themes we've seen on earlier Saxon releases that will perpetuate in later releases. Nigel Glockler makes his drummer debut here - and he is GOOD. The talent base for the band is good - maybe not quite up to Judas Priest or Iron Maiden level, but these guys wrote great songs and they play their metal hearts out for their fans. It's a shame they were not appreciated in the USA the way they were in their native England because they have a lot to offer the metal world. I have most of their CD's and all are in the 4 and 5 star range. Don't miss out on these guys. If you are new to SAXON, begin with POWER & THE GLORY, DENIM AND LEATHER, and INNOCENCE IS NO EXCUSE.

Awesome!,

I think this is one of the best metal albums of all time. I thought it was incredible when it first came out and it has not lost its punch today. Saxon never acheived the success they deserved but with great bands like this that is to be expected.

I do not own this import CD but the original vinyl picture disc. I am not a Saxon fanatic but I know what I like and "The Power and the Glory" album was the pinnacle for the group in my opinion. Each track has real depth and individuality and makes the whole album engaging from start to finish. Shake your head and play that air guitar or drums and wear a big smile.

This is one of the most powerful and heavy albums Saxon hasever record. This one also marked the debut of drummer Nigel Glockler which does an incredible work on drums. "Power and the glory" and "Midas touch" features heavy guitar riffs performed by Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver. Nigel shines on "This town rocks" with a double bass drum. Biff sings with power and meaning what he says. Go for it!

Saxon - 'Power & The Glory' (EMI Import),
By
This review is from: Power & The Glory (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1983, as 'Power & The Glory' was Saxon's sixth lp. No idea as to why there are several one-star reviews here by others. I remember this record being considered to be somewhat of an under rated classic back in the day when 'metal DID more or less rule'. Noticed that drummer Nigel Glockler had just joined the band. Tunes that I truly miss hearing on a semi-regular basis are the powerful title track "Power&The Glory" (VH1 Classic should play that video sometime), their anthem (sort of) "This Town Rocks", "Watching The Sky" and "The Eagle Has Landed". Prime '80's top of the line British metal to be had here. Highly recommended.

With out a doubt in my mind the best record Saxon ever released, POWER AND THE GLORY is HeavyMetal Thunder Saxon style! I saw the music video for the title track and i thought it was the best Saxon song i ever heard! I really think that this was the last true Saxon album before they went iffy, i mean CRUSADER was good(for the title track), but it had some questionable parts that would rear it's ugly head on the album after INNOCENCE IS NO EXCUSE.I digress, this is the definative saxon album along with WHEELS OF STEEL, solid classic english metal not heard today.

One of the Best!,

I can't believe those that rated this album with 1 or 2 stars. This was, and is, definitely one of the best Metal albums of all time. I remember when the album originally came out. It was viewed as Saxon's best. I actually had the opportunity to see Saxon after this album came out. They were incredible. It's ashame that they never received the recognition they deserved.
For true Metal fans, get this album! It should defintely be in your collection if you appreciate original 80's Heavy Metal and not some water downed version of it. |
