About the Author

Born in Connecticut in 1792, Finney was nearly thirty years of age before he turned from his skepticism regarding Christianity and wholeheartedly embraced the Bible as the true Word of God. He gave up his law profession in order to spread the Gospel and soon became the most noteworthy revivalist of the nineteenth century Second Great Awakening. In 1835, upon the request of Arthur Tappan, Finney established the theology department at Oberlin Collegiate Institute (today known as Oberlin College). He served there as a professor of theology as well as pastor of Oberlin's First Congregational Church until a few years before his death. In August of 1875, Finney died in Oberlin following a heart ailment.

Well, it didn't talk so much about power from God as much as it did repentance from sin, which is Mr. Finney's forte', but he did a very good job of bringing Godly conviction!

Power from God is a practical, straightforward book that outlines how you can have power in your ministry and life. The answer is simple really...Christ.

Throughout the book, Finney addresses many issues: power in the personal life of a Christian and for the members of the church body. He uses several examples for illustration purposes.

Furthermore, he describes the difference between conversion and consecration, the need for self-examination, the necessity that you be infused with the power of God before doing anything at all, the need to wrestle in prayer and your need to depend on Holy Spirit.

Finney dealt with many hard issues...like social amusements. Is it innocent or is it evil? He shares with you there is only one real litmus test. If you want to find out what it is, you need to explore his book.

Some may think his stance is harsh but I didn't find it so. I was amazed by his conviction and was willing to put it in print. However, he didn't just stop there he backed up his arguments with biblical truths from the Bible.

Power from God is a refreshing book! It lays out concretely the problems that the church is facing and the reasons why she is facing them. Though this book was written back in the 1800's Finney had such insight as to the direction that the church was going.

What I didn't like about the book was the way in which some sections were written because it required me to reread them to ensure my understanding. Taking more time...but in spite of this I was able to complete this 159 page book within a week's time.

If your ministry is lacking power, if you feel your prayer life is not yielding results, if you feel that the fire has gone out or your love for Christ faded you need to read this book and be energized, challenged and awakened. You will receive Power from God.
