Book Description

November 14, 1997 0155039768 978-0155039766 1
Providing both practical and theoretical information for student journalists who need to know how and why, POWER JOURNALISM demystifies online research by outlining and explaining computer-assisted reporting techniques. In clear, easy-to-understand explanations of the latest research technologies, this text details how and why journalists use specific resources, and provides actual computer commands for using each resource, as well as written examples by journalists who utilized the discussed technology. Resources discussed include: newsgroups; bulletin board systems; commercial databases; commercial services such as Compuserve, FTP, Gopher, the World Wide Web, CD-ROM databases, spreadsheet and database management programs; and information on nine-track tape and floppy disks.

This review is from: Power Journalism: Computer-Assisted Reporting (Paperback)
Please, never assign this book to a student again. Using sources over a decade old is frowned upon in every other discipline; surely, text about using internet as a source for journalists, is even more outmoded as technology is changing faster than research can keep up with.

Pros for the book--it's well written, well constructed, and gets information across with ease even if you are not the most tech-savvy writer.

Cons--Again, it is completely outdated. The concepts are fine and good, but all the examples are shown (I'm fairly sure) in DOS.

Remember: College students today have never lived in a world that wasn't wired.

Instead of this text I would HIGHLY recommend Journalism Next: A Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing by Mark Briggs. Published in 2009, Briggs covers a breadth of information for journalists and a good guide to the basics of web 2.0.
