5.0 out of 5 stars A fluent guide, July 31, 2002
By
John A Storey (Leeds, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Power of Kabbalah, the book, is written by Yehuda Berg, the son of Rav Berg and, like someone born into a foreign culture, Yehuda comes across as naturally fluent and entirely at home with his subject, with a simple way of expressing concepts that have seemed shrouded in obscurity for centuries.
This is not a dry exposition of intellectual ideas. It is a thoroughly practical handbook of wisdom. Yehuda Berg describes our true nature, the nature of the universe and the underlying reason for our discontent.
One of the greatest lessons of this book is that our deepest desire is to be the cause of our own fulfilment, and that we achieve this by resisting our reactive impulses and making proactive choices at every step in our lives. He gives many examples, drawn from all areas of life, of how we might offer this resistance and make a better choice. I have lived for many years with the wisdom of proactivity, which I learned from Steven Covey's wonderful book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. But I have to say that, despite those many years of working with proactivity, this new book seriously deepened my understanding of what proactivity was all about, and especially the spiritual dimension behind such actions. This greater understanding has helped me to take proactive decisions with increased confidence, and I have made several such decisions as a direct result of my contact with this book.
The discussions of scientific theory compared to Kabbalistic teaching I found absolutely fascinating, with striking parallels in the Big Bang theory and the ten-dimensional superstring theory of the universe.
Yehuda Berg also provides a good introduction to the 72 "Names of God", their origin and relevance to our lives. This may be a step too far for some readers and needs to be approached with an open mind. But as the author says of the whole book, "Don't believe a word of what you read. There must be tangible results in your direct experience. When that happens, you will feel the truth of Kabbalah in your body and soul, and you will come to know the wisdom of the sages in your heart."
Whether you are a complete newcomer to the Kabbalah, or have already been introduced, there is something to learn from this book. It has become a treasured possession for me; one that I will want to dip into often and read through more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Profound Yet Extremely Practical, January 29, 2002
By
Jerry S. (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I've read a number of self-help books in my life. And I've read quite a few books on Kabbalah. This is the first book that has managed to make it all so clear and simple. I read it in about 90 minutes. Then i read it again 2 more times. This books lucidly explains who we are, why we are here, and where we came from. If world leaders and the world's religions lived by the extraordinary principles presented in this book, the corruption of religion would cease and people would be empowered to transform their lives and truly change this world. Like the books says, this wisdom is the seed of all wisdom -- the true secret teachings of life. I recommend it to anyone who desires personal peace and joy!

A couple of thousand years ago, when Rabbi Hillel was asked to summarize what the Torah was all about, he said, "That which is hateful to you do not do to others. All the rest is commentary." While this comment represents a remarkable summary of Jewish law, reading this quote is not the same as reading the Torah.

Although the Kabbalah is an ancient part of Jewish teaching, the author chose to make this subject accessible to readers of all backgrounds. It is free of religious dogma and preaching. Just as Hillel tried to give the essence of Jewish teaching in a concise phrase, the author tries to deliver the essence of Kabbalistic teachings in a brief book. But it is not the Kabbalah, nor is it a translation of the Kabbalah.

Through straightforward teachings and analogies, the author does an excellent job (in most cases) of conveying information that will help you lead a more fulfilling life. This book teaches principles that can make you a better human being and treat others better. Regardless of your background, you can apply these principles for self-improvement.

This book compares everything from quark and string theory and the Big Bang theory to Kabbalistic teachings with remarkable analogies and writings that predate these discoveries. Other analogies are not so clear. His comparison of Kabbalistic teachings to our DNA is a bit tenuous. And his light bulb analogy is just plain backwards. Those who studied electricity know that it flows from negative to positive and that when a bulb burns out, it's an open circuit, not a short circuit.

The author tries to decouple this philosophy from Judaism by telling us that these writings are older than Judaism itself. That may be true, but so are parts of the Torah. Hillel's quote became that of an anonymous teacher and was rewritten to be closer to the Christian version of the golden rule. This does not, however, make the teaching any less valuable.

If the author truly believed in all these principles, I expect he would be less concerned about his ego, take the Madonna quotes and his picture off the jacket, and put the book on the Internet for free. I've found other books that way, which I later purchased, and I suspect that if he did the same, his sales would be higher.

In summary, it's a good new age self help book, but is not what you would get with a detailed study of the Kabbalah, which normally comes after four decades of intensive Judaic study. Nevertheless, the latter would not be appropriate for most readers, while this book is full of valuable information. It does, however, admonish you not to believe a word of what you read. That would have to include this review, and this very sentence.

As a recent convert to Judaism I have been interested in learning about Kabbalah. A few of the previous books I have picked up have been hard to get in to and I ended up never making it much father than the back cover. This is the first book I've read that has made it accessible to the lay person.

Also, I wish I had read this book years ago. This is not a book that should be read only by Jewish people, this is something that could transform everyone. The idea is that the original Kabbalah author is Abraham who is the father (at least in theory) of just about every major religion today.

Even if you don't initially understand/believe/agree with some of the sources for the core concepts, all the concepts are quite fascinating and useful and I think if everyone practiced Kabbalah this world would realize its full potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book for YOU, July 7, 2004
I rarely come across with books (of this importance) that inspire and tricker that special emotion in me. This book did it and I am eternally Thankful for Yehuda Berg for writing this excellent introduction to Kabbalah and its secrets. Not only that, but he asks you to test these simple, yet very profound, principles and prove them to be so in your own life. Are you fed up with people telling you what to believe about your existence and power within you? I am talking about the power that is accessible to you and able to fulfill your life.

Don't just read this book and accept it from its face value. Rather, experiment with what this special book has to offer and the door to 99% of universe is opened for you. That means, you are living the teaching true. I would say to you as my friend that come out from the cemetry of dead and face the light; with this book it is possible.

You know what truly is the acid test of truth? It is that you are given the tools and can try to disprove the author. Well, he gives you the tools. Try to disprove him; and in so doing, you will be prove these eternal principles valid in your life.

Unfortunately, much of the wisdom of kabbalah has been hidden for ages. People were, until now, denied the access to this wonderful information. Now, since our society allows us greater freedom, it is possible for people like Yehuda Berg to come forward and explain the mystery.

I was a bit sceptical when buying this book -- because I have already read scores of books on the subject of mysticism. Yet this book, though elementary, has all the crucial main points that you need to know.

Highly Recommended. Good buy. Go for it.

An amazing and life changing book.
Forget that countless celebrities are linked to the Kabbalah. Its MUCH bigger than any one person.

Its up to you to take what you want from this book - but there are SO many logical and easy (to understand) principles to help you improve your life, that I believe by just reading this book alone, it can help you to make improvements - just by your being more aware!
naturally, its a lot more difficult than that if you wish to make permanent and life changing changes, but this book is the perfect start!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written, December 26, 2002
By A Customer
There are not many books which I really enjoy reading, but Berg's writting style makes this work very inspiring and difficult to put down. I do not know much about Kabbalah (which is why I bought the book) so I cannot say if this is a credible source, but what I can say is that I am very happy I bought this book and I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.
