Book Description

June 28, 1994
The spellbinding sequel to "Powers That Be," by Hugo and Nebula Award-winning authors Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough.

The natives of Petaybee claimed their planet was sentient, but the officials of Intergal did not believe them . . . or want to believe them. The planet was rich in valuable ore, and Intergal was determined to mine that ore no matter what the cost. Yanaba Maddock, once a company spy, was adopted by the planet and its people as one of their own. Now her loyalties are to Petaybee, not Intergal, and she is dedicated to keeping Intergal from killing the world she has come to love. But without proof of the planet's sentience, Intergal will proceed with its mining operations. Can Yana find a way to convince Intergal of Petaybee's sentience before it is too late?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this sequel to Powers That Be , the hardworking inhabits of the sentient planet Petaybee continue their struggles with the magnates controlling Intergal Company. While chairperson Dr. Whittaker Fiske has been convinced of the planet's intelligence--and the necessity of negotiating with it--other members of the board believe that he and the Petaybeans are suffering from a collective delusion. Two representatives arrive to investigate: the first, Marmion de Revers Algemeine, maintains an open mind, but cultural anthropologist Matthew Luzon uses his training to cheat non-technical cultures out of their heritage. A group of Petaybeans and sympathizers set out for other villages to win over those willing to continue mining despite the planet's requests to stop. After numerous convoluted plot turns, a Petaybean resistance leads to a satisfactory conclusion. This lackluster tale suffers from excessive sentimentality, while characters are no better developed than in the first volume. Both independently and together, these collaborators have displayed their gifts to better advantage elsewhere.

From Library Journal

Former Intergal officer Yanaba Maddock allies herself with the residents of her adopted planet Petaybee against her one-time employers to prevent the mineral rape of a sentient world. Shortsighted opportunists clash head on with stubborn defenders of a world and a way of life in this sequel to Powers That Be (LJ 5/15/93). McCaffrey and Scarborough collaborate seamlessly to tell a first-rate sf adventure with strong male and female protagonists and a life-affirming theme.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most moving and gripping science fiction story I've read, November 7, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Power Lines (Hardcover)
I've read many sci-fi stories but this is the first I've read that expresses the idea of a sentient planet. This sequal to " Powers that Be " plays with ideas and blends native american belifs with adventure and wild stories. Yanaba is a strong character and you feel as if she's your best friend. Clodgah Senunkut is the most caring person I've come across in my reading.Bunny, Diego and 'Cita are great compliments to the story. And Sean gives Yanaba a love so strong it makes your tears come to your eyes. Anne McCaffrey is a master in her element and truly knows what she's doing.

I absolutly loved this book, it was one of those books you just can't put down. Its plot was stable and developed well, and was easy to follow. On a whole, I enjoyed the book and I can't wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars i LOVED this series, July 27, 2003
By A Customer
i personally loved this series. maybe its because i could relate to the story more easily than to a world of dragons, not that i didnt love the Dragonriders of Pern. however, Petaybee was different. I absolutely loved the series, although sometimes the plot is a little shakey and some parts of the story dont match others.
