3.0 out of 5 stars Academically interesting, but poor writing and editing impedes quality, February 8, 2012

This review is from: Power in Movement: Social Movements and Contentious Politics (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics) (Paperback)
I read this book as assigned reading for a sociology class on social movements. I felt that the content was for the most part of high quality, the organization was strong throughout, and the explanations were manageable. However, the writing in this book is a complete disaster. It's quite clear that Tarrow needs an editor; it's not so clear that there was an editor, at least not for this latest revision of the text. There are places where the section titles are incorrect. There are typographical errors. But most disturbing is the face that there's at least one grammatical error on each page (and I'm not talking about trivial or negotiable errors - I'm talking about indisputable, blatant errors). It's to the point that if you're anything like me, you'll find yourself paying more attention to the technical aspects of the writing than the content. That's a problem when you're trying to read for content. Some sentences were so destroyed either by poor writing, poor editing when amending them for this revised edition, or a combination thereof that they were entirely impenetrable.

If you can get past the technically awful writing and you're interested in the subject matter, you'll probably enjoy this. But if you have tendencies to be distracted by frequent errors, you're in for a rough ride.
