5.0 out of 5 stars This album is great., July 15, 2011

I understand why some people don't like this. It's not The Advantage. There are some GREAT artists on here (Willits, Flossin, F'n Champs) and they made amazing interpretations of NES tunes. My personal favorite is the Marble Madness medley for solo piano.

Again, this is great if you're familiar with the artists and know what you're getting into.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, April 7, 2011
This review is from: Power Up! Mutations & Mutilations of 8 Bit Hits: T (Audio CD)
I had high hopes for this CD when picking it up from Fry's. From taking a look at the tracks listed on the back of the case, it looked like it would be a wonderful trip down memory lane, and the price was only $12.99. Why not? Upon leaving the store, I took off the shrink wrap, took off the covering of the case, and was greeted by an obvious rip-off of Nintendo Powers logo, instead with the CD's title in its place. I opened up the case, pulled out the CD, and the artwork in place of the holder looked like a original Nintendo cartridge holder. Remember those black coverings? Yep, that's what was there. I have to admit, even though they were ripping stuff off of Nintendo, I figured it was tribute to old school goodness, and I was pleased. I put the CD in my car, turned up the volume, and was ready to rock out to some remixes of some of my favorite old 8-bit songs.

What I heard couldn't even be considered music by any means. To be honest, I would've been happier listening to the original 8-bit versions of the songs over the garbage that was being sent to my eardrums. It's like the composers of these songs didn't even try, or they purposely chose the worst possible arrangements, or the worst possible instrument, or for the most part both! Defensive Mode, AKA Metal Man from Mega Man 2, was actually a pretty good remix until they brought in this instrument that isn't even remotely pleasant to the ears. It's like a constant ringing needlessly added to the song. I went through the whole CD to see if there was at least one decent remix to be heard, but sadly, my money had been spent on garbage, absolute garbage.

If you like pissing your money away, then by all means pick up this "wonderful" composition of 8-bit glory; otherwise stick with OC ReMix, or any other site that hosts free remixes of video game music. On a side note, I hated this CD so much that I actually burnt my own CD called 'The True Power Up!' using the same song selection, but with much better remixes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite The Advantage, February 8, 2008

I do not own this but a friend recently bought it. As a huge fan of "The Advantage" I was anxious to hear some other bands' takes on NES music.

Unfortunately most of what I heard were songs that "The Advantage" had already covered on either of their first two albums. I suppose you can only do so much when the original source material is a collection of blops and boops but the similarities were startling.

That said, this is still a fine trip down memory lane for any child of the 80's but all-in-all I prefer "The Advantage" and they're musical takes.
