The seminal PBS series on world mythology
“Dazzling and still potently relevant” —San Francisco Chronicle

Joseph Campbell taught for nearly 40 years at Sarah Lawrence College; he authored and edited scores of books and inspired generations of scholars and artists.

Journalist Bill Moyers distinguished himself at PBS, CBS, NBC, and Newsday; his many honors include lifetime achievement Emmy® and Peabody awards.

Twenty-five years ago, renowned scholar Joseph Campbell sat down with veteran journalist Bill Moyers for a series of interviews that became one of the most enduringly popular programs ever aired on PBS. In dialogues that adroitly span millennia of history and far-flung geography, the two men discuss myths as metaphors for human experience and the path to transcendence, touching on topics as diverse as world religion, heroic figures, and pop culture.

Now featuring newly recorded introductions by Bill Moyers, this series demonstrates that, despite superficial differences between cultures, all stories are humanity’s story.

Emmy journalist Bill Moyers with his celebrated documentary style, interviews Joseph Campbell (death 1987) over his life-long devotion to uncovering origins and uses of age-old myths. Campbell, a professor, talks the language that a novice on the topic can understand. His search for myths from all over the world, amid every civilization, and throughout the length of history itself, has been pared down to less than 6 hours in 6 episodes. But it's enough to inspire further investigation, and for those interested, more reading from author Campbell.

Even Moyers occasionally appears amazed, disconcerted, and/or mystified by Campbell's answers to his elementary questions. Campbell adds many personal anecdotes in his responses, along with bits of his vast mental data base of myths. Even humor. It's obvious he could spend hours answering every question. He attempts keeping it simple enough for the average intellectual to grasp. It became one of the most popular PBS presentations of the 20th century. If you've not seen the earlier DVD release, this new 25th edition, is definitely the own to own.

Campbell bring up faith, himself claiming none, but he saw a connection among many, if not all, forms of religion through recurring versions of the myths he uncovered in his life of research. Some will question placing a myth into the context of their components of faith. But religions of all kinds are often about beliefs, and many of them are scientifically not provable. Thus, religion is a faith. Unfortunately, we can't not record what Joseph Campbell found to be true as he physically passed out of his world of myth. It appears that Moyers was not giving up on his protestant faith, but that connection sure did produce some lively discourse between the two men.

Mythology is one of my favorite subjects. We can learn so much about the people of the past and how much we really all have is common by looking at the myths of the past. In Joseph Campbell And the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers, he delves into the myths, legends and symbols of eastern and western civilization. You might think watching a lecture for hours would be boring, but I found myself glued to my seat as I ingested the knowledge Mr. Campbell had to share. He touched on all my favorite topics from world religion to heroic figures in history. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys philosophy or mythology.

Naturally, the video quality is not up to today's standards, but these discussions and Joseph Campbell are still fascinating, especially from a Jungian point of view. Well worth having and watching.

Joseph Campbell was a brilliant expert on comparative religions. This series of interviews with Bill Moyers is an illuminating analysis of the similarities and differences among religions across all cultures. Even if you do not believe in any higher power, Campbell's observations on death, mysticism, parallel fables and other topics covered are well worth the time. You will leave with a much deeper understanding of religion, appreciation for the similarities among cultures and, if you are a believer, insights into the universality of many of your own beliefs. Having taken a comparative religion course in college and carried an appreciation for that topic since then, The Power of Myth was a great way to rekindle that interest decades later.

The new Dvd was very well worth it. I would scan back and forth as I was catching concepts JC had expressed in ways I had never thought of. Be sure to view the whole thing first before you start breaking it down. JC is so knowledgable and insightful as to how our lives are the myth. And how our traditions are shaped by the myth. I had no idea I would get so much out of it.

I first saw this series in the early mid-80s and in re-visiting them now is just as wonderful as it was then. I LOVE this interview and all the information. It is just the greatest!!

I ordered this item as a gift for my brother who is a pastor and a fan of Joseph Campbell. This series forces many to think "outside of the box" and appeals to both the layman and the theologian. It is an excellent source for educating people on deeper concepts associated with the major religions prevalent in the world today. Bill Moyers does a great job of asking probing questions to allow Joseph Campbell the ability to clearly express and compare the ideas that shape cultural views of Christianity, Buddhism, etc...while connecting and comparing. Very insightful, especially for people who enjoy history and studying religion both past and present.
