5.0 out of 5 stars The Who's Who of Influences on Okinawan Music and more!, November 22, 2011

This review is from: The Power of Okinawa: Roots Music for the Ryukyus (Paperback)
This book contains s a broad range of influential musicians while also touching on a great deal of Okinawan musical history. I occasionally refer to it as it is a great resource. I also discuss this book from time to time with my kids as the book has excellent examples of sanshin performers which serve as good role models. I guess you could think of it as the Who's Who of Influences on Okinawan Music (basically the roots to present day). I also found the book helpful in that it captures the essence of the history and summarizes interesting background information. Okinawan cities and locations (accompanied by pictures in both black and white and also a section in color) are discussed which makes the reading more enjoyable. A great way to get acquainted with Okinawan culture, and especially if you are interested in music, it is a wonderful book to help understand the key influential people (both the individuals and groups) when it comes to Okinawan music - especially with respect to the sanshin (Okinawan banjo like instrument). If so, then this book is definitely for you and better yet, if you know someone who is into Okinawan culture, you may want to mention this best kept secret as well. It's a relatively small book, but contains a great deal of information.

Lastly, there is a handy glossary in the back of both Okinawan and Japanese terms, and also a section to find other reference books. I found some online internet resources there too, but of course the website contains more current information as it is updated on an ongoing basis.
