Power to the Patient,
By lori denman (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Power to the Patient: The Treatments to Insist on When You're Sick (Hardcover)
This is quite simply the best book I have ever read by a doctor written for patients. Dr. Rosenfeld is not only very experienced and knowledgeable, but he writes so that I can understand. Some of my closest friends have medical problems that they have discussed with me. There is more information in this book than their doctors ever told them. It's great.

GREAT BOOK - HIGHLY ENLIGHTENING!,

This review is from: Power to the Patient: The Treatments to Insist on When You're Sick (Hardcover)
With so many patients and physicians running on overload, the lack of adequate health care is certainly evident - at least in my country. Yes, there are some fantastic, compassionate doctors out there, at least we hope there are, but all too often we run across those who hurry us in one door and out the other quicker than a fast food restaurant. I have had some horrendous experiences with doctors in the past who, when not being able to diagnose a problem, tell you that every ailment from sore muscles to stomach pain is either hormones or stress, simply because they do not know what other "label" to put on it. We go to the doctors expecting THEM to tell us what treatment we need, not the other way around. After all, they are the professionals who graduated from medical school. I particularly liked this book, written by a doctor, because it provides us with information on over forty very common illnesses and ailments, and the author gives us a clear understanding of the diseases and the treatment we should expect or ask for. He provided me with more information than any doctor in my community has ever provided. Rosenfeld seems like the type of doctor we all dream of finding but, alas, many of us sail through life and never do. As for his sense of humour, it would brighten the day of any patient. His warmth, compassion, concern and expertise beam through the pages of the book. If, by chance, he ever decides to relocate, I hope fate guides him to my little corner of the world - we DESPERATELY need more Rosenfeld's in the world. Readers will value the book for its expert advice and admire the author for his beside manner and compassionate, light-hearted human nature.

A Doctor Who Stands Up For Patients,
By A Customer
This review is from: Power to the Patient: The Treatments to Insist on When You're Sick (Hardcover)
In times of managed care, Dr. Rosenfeld has the courage to stand up to the insurance companies and empower patients to speak up for themselves. This book tells me what I need to know to be my own advocate for my own healthcare. I recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about their healthcare.

So you're sick; do you need a doctor, a lawyer or this book?,

Yeah, welcome to the world of modern medical care. Depending on how good your medical plan is, or even how good your doctor is at listening to you, you may or may NOT get the care you need and are, I might add, paying for. This book helps you see to it that your health care provider (ie, HMO or medical plan) and doctor are giving you the best care possible, the care that is right for you. The idea of patients as advocates for their health is not new, but this book lists common ailments such as gall bladder, Parkinson's and gives the spin on how to get your doctor to give you the best treatment. What's really a crying shame is that when people are ill, they are not equipped to do battle with their health care provider and doctor. So make sure you have a family member read this book, in case one day you are too ill to fight for your own health care needs.

Supplement it with a medical handbook,
This review is from: Power to the Patient: The Treatments to Insist on When You're Sick (Hardcover)
I found this book disappointing. I started by looking up breast cancer, a most common female problem. It did not appear in the list of chapters or in the index. I then checked all 27 general references under cancer. In many of the pages just the word 'cancer' appeared with no more information. I could not find any information on breast cancer. Next I tried prostate cancer but all I found was a mention of this problem at the end of the book under checkups in adult life. There is, however, a complete chapter of ten pages devoted to Lyme disease, surely not one of the major scourges of mankind. Much of this book is useful but it certainly needs to be supplemented by a good medical handbook.

An Important Self-Help Book,
By
This review is from: Power to the Patient: The Treatments to Insist on When You're Sick (Hardcover)
Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld steps forward to help those of us who may be in the dark concerning health problems, managed health care, or who may be locked into an insurance company that dictates treatment including physicians, and offers straightforward advice and guidance in order to educate patients as to what their rights are and what they should be asking and receiving. This is an important book for Americans today.
