Book Description

0044452810 978-0044452812 September 1989
This is an edited volume based on a series of lectures about the importance of locality in social and political science. It reflects the recent revival of interest in a social theory that takes place and space seriously. The essays work around and upon two major themes: the intellectual history of concepts of place and the interpellation of power and place. They do so in different ways. The authors stress, however, that they are not "engaged in the comtemplation of the idiographic" and this work should not be read in this way. They are concerned "with the role of place in social organization and social thought, not as an end in itself".

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb -- but a little over-priced, November 19, 2007
This review is from: The Power of Place: Bringing Together Geographical and Sociological Imaginations (Hardcover)
This is without doubt the best introduction to the subject to date. The several authors bring a range of skills to bear on the manifold aspects of power and space and the editors do a fine job in sythesizing what is too often a mélange of incoherent ideas and findings.

I'd recommend this book as a perfect choice for advanced seminars in the social sciences--except that it is probably a little too expensive for the average student?
