Book Description

May 1998
Published to coincide with a major exhibition in April 1998 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, this is an account of the evolution of the poster, from its early beginnings in the 1870s to the increasingly radical approach of the late-20th century. The book is divided into three parts: "Issues and Ideas" examines the political poster; "Products and Services" takes a look at the poster in the context of advertising and consumerism; while "Arts, Events, Performances" covers posters used to promote artistic activities, and looks at the poster as a work of art in its own right. Contributors from all three fields provide insights into how posters have been used as a communications tool in the 20th century, while the illustrations offer some of the best examples of poster art.

This review is from: Power of the Poster (Paperback)
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book when I bought it. It ended up being a catalogue from an exhibit held at the V&A Museum in England. Now, if you like posters, this is a great book, regardless. The exhibit focuses on 225 posters from the late 1800s to today. While there are some posters included from the United States and other countries, the vast majority of these posters are from Britain. As with most exhibition catalogues, the text is made up of essays from various contributors. Some of the themes presented are 'Posters as Propaganda', 'Posters for Performance', and "Commercial Advertising". If you are looking for more of a book on the history of poster art or graphic design, I would recommend Meggs' History of Graphic Design.
