Another Cash-In From Petra's Former Label.,
By
This review is from: Power Of Praise, The (Audio CD)
The two stars given above are for the compilation and NOT the music. If anything, the music definitely deserves five stars. In the case of Petra, one of the longest-running pioneers of Christian rock, there has been an ongoing trend of record labels cashing in on the band after they've moved on to another one. With Word Records, whom the band was signed with from 1989-2000, this is no exception. Word released their first Petra compilation in 2002 entitled "Still Means War" consisting of various songs whose lyrics dealt with victory over spiritual warfare. Now in 2003, Word has struck again with yet another compilation. "The Power of Praise" consists of material mostly from the band's first two Praise projects, 1989's "The Rock Cries Out" and 1997's "We Need Jesus". There is also one track each from 1990's "Beyond Belief" (Creed), 1991's "Unseen Power" (In the Likeness of You) and 1995's "No Doubt" (We Hold Our Hearts Out To You). While the music itself is not bad, the compilation is somewhat uneven and patchy. The band was not involved in the preparation for this compilation whatsoever. There is no doubt in my mind that with a brand new Petra album being released in August 2003 on current label Inpop Records, Word had to act quick to cash in on the buzz surrounding the upcoming release. To hear this music in the proper context, I would recommend picking up "Petra Praise-The Rock Cries Out" and "Petra Praise 2-We Need Jesus" as well as their 2001 release on Inpop Records, "Revival". "The Power of Praise" is for Petra collectors only. Others may want to pass on this one. The music is excellent though.

Keep-Up the great work, Petra,,,,,,I was staying at a hotel and switched to the Gospel Music Channel, this hotel's TV's where desgined to play Pre-Downloaded Music in their system. So I was getting ready to leave and decided to listen to some Up-lifting music and I actually stopped in my track's when I heard what song's was playing and went to the TV to see if I could get the name of the CD. It took me a while to get it, because at the time this CD was not avaiable to buy yet. So I took the time to look it up on the internet and found it perordered it. I finally got a copy of the CD, and now it's about all I listen to. In fact I am due to get married very soon and am going to use one of the song's from this CD to be played at my wedding, the song Title , We Hold our Hearts out to you. Thank -You for allowing me to give my view's and opinion on this Powerfull CD.
Sincerely & Respectfully Submitted Cecil Leigeber
