This book is a great resource that belongs on every parent's bookshelf. The market is brimming with books detailing the physical and behavioral development of children, yet so few of these books even admit that there is a spiritual side of things! If we want to care for all facets of our children, we must admit this truth into our lives. "Power of a Praying Parent" fills this gap by pointing out spiritual realities and suggesting ways that we can cover our childrens' lives with our prayers.

The book is divided into managable chapters that highlight different areas where we can pray for our children. Each chapter starts out with an explanation of that area, followed by a prayer, and closes with scripture verses for reflection. I like this format because it is very adaptable. You could skip right to an area where you know that your child needs prayer, or you could start at the beginning and faithfully read each chapter as a general guide. Because the chapters are short, you could use a chapter as a devotional each time you pray. I also appreciate the way the scripture verses are typed out so that I don't have to spend time looking each one up.

Omartian's tone is never heavy handed. Along the way, she admits her short comings and shares her struggles, and I always feel as if I have a wise but gentle friend whispering into my ear when I read her works.

This is an excellent gift for parents who are expecting or for a parent struggling with a teen. Because the tone is so welcoming and compassionate, I also find it's a great witnessing tool. People who may be otherwise closed to the gospels are sometimes open to anything if they think that it may help their child. I'd also recommend this book to uncles, aunts, teachers, grandparents, youth workers, basically anyone who is interested in the welfare of our children.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Power of a Praying Parent, March 10, 2000
God is so awesome and He has declared the we will not be people without hope. I have only read, applied about half of this book to my daughter's life and already God has been faithful. Time is out for just saying 'we have got to pray'. It is time to pray. I praise God for the revelation of scriptures that had not touched my life before has come alive through this book and the prayers. I have started to pray the prayers with my husband and then seperately with my daughter because I wanted to let her know what I was saying to God on her behalf and that God was concern about every area of her life. The prayers are structured and so positive that I did not receive resistance but she received and has been encouraged to know that things that concerned her concerns God. God bless you Stormie for following the leading of the Holy Spirit to produce this help to parents. Parents, be encourage and remember, that God has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Power Of A Praying Parent, November 29, 1999
I keep this book next to my bed near my bible and use it on a daily basis. This is a great book. In today's world every parent should be praying daily for their children. The prayers in this book give me the right words to use when asking for God's help. I now continue to buy copies of the book to share with my friends who are also raising children. We all need a little help at times.

Praise The Lord. This book is a must for any parent who truly wants the best for their child. The prayers in this book are so overwhelming. I have never felt so much joy. I have highlighted each prayer page for quick reference and I have learned that the power of prayer if the only real weapon against the devils plans for our children. I highly recommend that every parent invest in a copy of this book IMMEDIATELY! Begin Today and continually pray for your children no matter what age they are. Stormie has truly opened up a new world for me and my family. A Praying parent is the best blessing any child can hope to have....

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Tool for Parents, May 10, 1999
By A Customer
I am a grandparent who bought this book to read and pass on to my daughter, however, I found it so powerful that I have to keep it to refer to in the future and I will have to buy another to give to my daughter. I read and prayed through this book in one day. I could not put it down. I prayed for my grown daughter and her husband, myself and my grandchildren. It has prayers for everything, things we may not even realize we need to pray for. Who knows the far reaching effects our prayers may have--it is a wonderful tool for any parent or grandparent to own. God Bless you Stormie for your wonderful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars One book every parent should read, June 16, 2002

Yeah, most new parents read "What to Expect When You're Expecting," or one of the other similar books. But if you're a parent who wants to really do some good for your child, prayer is of the utmost importance. This book is a good place to start.

Stormie talks a lot about her own experiences with prayer in the lives of her children. This book is divided into thirty chapters. The first part of each chapter, usually only 2 or 3 pages long, discusses a different area of childrens' lives, and the importance of praying specifically for that area. Then follows an example prayer, then "Weapons of Warfare," several Scripture verses on that particular topic.

A parent's prayers should go well beyond the examples in this book, of course. But especially for a new parent, or even a new Christian, this book gives great examples from which to build upon.

2.0 out of 5 stars One difficulty I had with this book..., April 6, 2001

I was given this book as a Christmas present about six months after the accidental drowning death of my two-year-old son. I have two older children and anxiously began reading to see what insights might lie within. After reading the chapter entitled "Securing protection from harm," I found myself feeling furious. I went back and read it again to see if I had missed something. Stomie's book implies that even if harm does come to your children, if you have covered them with prayer this pain or harm will be " to their betterment and not to their destruction." As a mother who prayed for safety and protection for her children daily (as well as their father and grandparents who prayed for them in this regard as well), it is frustrating to see that Stormie leaves no room for the FACT that sometimes tragedy happens. Her book implies that our son's death is a result of our lack of prayers. Her own son's unscathed escape from a car accident is attributed to the prayers of his parents. To what should my husband and I attribute the death of our son? I would have liked to see some kind of disclaimer or acknowledgement of the fact that tragedy happens sometimes to even praying parents.

I let myself cool off for a month or so and picked the book back up to read again. I realize that there is a lot there that is good, but I was so offended initially that it took me a while to see that. I pray that Stomie Omartian never learns first hand that despite all of our prayers, our children are not always shielded from harm and even death. I imagine that if she had lost a child, the tone of her "protection" chapter would have been quite different. I recommend a book called "When Life is Changed Forever by the Death of Someone Near" by Rick Taylor. He is a Christian author who lost a son in an accidental drowning and who offers great perspective on learning to trust God again after such tragedies.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I Could I Would Give This Book 10 stars, January 11, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This book is a wonderful tool to add to your study of the word of God. She gives you scriptures at the end of every chapter to assist you in your everyday walk on different topics concerning your child. She talks about things that you would never think about praying for your child. Her topics from Praying for your childs mate, Praying to God to reveal your childs gifts, and teaching your children to choose the right friends. I believe she is truly anointed and I applaud the way she uses her own family as an example.

Stormie Omartian has a wonderful gift of writing about the power of prayer. She has several books on prayer: the Power of a Praying Wife, Praying Parent, Praying Woman. I think she does an extrordinary job of focusing on the topics and prayers that you can easily memorize and even use as a reference.

If you have children or knows someone who does, pick up this book, it will definitely change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONE book every parent should have!, June 11, 2001
By
Bella Chan (Los Gatos, CA USA) - See all my reviews
If every parent can learn that we should bring up our children in partnership with God and not us alone, then we will realize that praying for our children is the only way we can fight their battle with the world on their behalf. And praying is the only way parents can have peace in their hearts while other parents worried every single day if the kid will get hurt at school or on the streets, worried if the kid will take drugs or belong to the gang, worried if the kid will be kidnapped or will runaway....

Knowing that we should pray for our children's daily life and their future, we have the peace knowing that even though our children will have their problems and accidents, but God will have His blessings on them wherever they go.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for Christian parents!, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book to refer to as you continually cover your children in prayer. It covers every area from prayers for their safety and against rebellion to praying that they will desire to live a healthy lifestyle and stay sexually pure. This book addresses many areas that you may never have thought to pray about otherwise. I would recommend you invest in your children's future and purchase this book and buy one as a gift for someone else and bless their children too!
