Amazon.com Product Description

Power Probe's Smart ECT2000 is an electronic circuit tracer that makes locating short and open circuits within a vehicle's wiring easier than ever before. Its advanced digital intelligence, built around a transmitter/receiver design, puts it far above all electronic tracers in the market, letting you quickly determine whether a circuit is shorted or open, regardless where it occurs in a vehicle. This coupled with built-in customization options and the array of adapters and clips included make it the easiest, fastest and most flexible way to trace circuits on your vehicles.

How Does it Work
Designed for convenient, fast circuit tracing, Power Probe's ECT2000 makes use of a modern two-part transmitter/receiver design. After connecting the Smart transmitter's 20-ft power lead to the vehicle's battery, a signal is generated through the green signal wire and banana plug. This signal is connected to the circuit you want to trace and radiates along its length, which you can trace by using the Smart receiver. The Smart transmitter can generate both grounded circuit signals and open circuit signals, which because of their different characteristics depending on the conditions of the circuit tested, offer users the flexibility they need to get the job done. The Power Probe ECT2000's receiver also features the ability to lock on to either of these signal types, causing it to ignore any others, streamlining your tracing process even further.

Also included with the ECT2000 are four of the most common adapters used, which helps you get connected to any electrical circuit on the vehicle. This lets you know immediately whether a circuit is shorted or open. You can also wiggle, twist, pull, push and flex wires or connectors, to observe a change in intermittent circuit conditions. The reception sensitivity feature allows you to lock in your preferred distance from the circuit. The receiver also shows the direction to the short circuit, eliminating the guesswork and having you working with circuitry like a pro.

Features:

  • Two-piece transmitter/receiver design for detecting short circuits and open circuits.
  • Ability to lock the receiver's sensitivity for short/grounded circuits, or open circuits during tests.
  • Includes the receiver ability to discern the direction along the circuit where the short is.

4.0 out of 5 stars You still need to understand electricity, February 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Power Probe ECT2000 Power Probe Short Circuit Detector (Misc.)
I bought this to help me trace a short in the rear defrost circuit of my car. I have a decent understanding of electricity, but I have a hard time finding grounds and shorts. In the end this product helped push me to find the trouble, but it didn't pinpoint it exactly. For example when I disconnected the rear defrost wires at each end and injected the signal at the fuse panel, I got a signal along both the ground wire and the lead wire. I didn't understand it at the time, but the two wires had shorted to each other in the wiring harness, a fact that would have made sense earlier to someone with better electrical troubleshooting knowledge. It took me a couple of hours to find the trouble and to understand the Power Probe signals, but at least I found it. I bought this to hopefully avoid tearing into wiring harnesses, but in the end I had to open several harnesses and track individual wires to find the trouble. I'm giving 4 stars because the Power Probe helped push me to find a problem when the dealer wanted $100 just to look at it, and I know the dealer would have replaced the whole wiring harness that I simply repaired. So in the end it saved me money and helped increase my electrical skills.
